Jakes Fountain Outhits Amerada To Take 14 8 Victory

Jakes Fountain outhit Amerada Thursday night to win 14 to 8 after rain halted the seventh inning. Bishop earned the win with eight runs charged to Amerada’s Reese and Wishart. Amerada’s eight errors aided the visitors while Jakes built a big lead with five runs in the third and fifth innings. The game paused in the seventh due to wind and possible home runs. Major war news follows with reports of renewed Red offensives in Korea and Allied counterattacks and troop deployments from Australia and Britain.

Lions Hear City Water System Expansion Update

Joe Smith new Lovington Municipal Utilities manager outlines completed sewer line extensions and remaining water lines. Plans for a city park water tower proceed while a $32,000 disposal plant and a $29,000 water tank are planned. Since January 251 new services have been added as Lovington modernizes its utilities.

Unemployment Racket Targeted by Lea County Farmers

Lea County farmers urge Governor Mabry to halt what they call an unemployment racket. They claim crops rot as local workers fail to secure labor while unemployment offices in Hobbs reportedly distribute checks to 170 claimants in June. They demand work for all including bank presidents and day laborers.

Maljamar Clinches Playoff With 7–0 Win Over Humble

Maljamar secured a playoff berth by routing Humble seven to nothing on Friday night. Had Maljamar lost, they would have faced a sub playoff to determine advancement. Humble was eliminated from direct playoff contention and sent to the sub playoff slot.

Seven Killed Over Weekend In New Mexico

At least seven people died violently in New Mexico over the weekend including four traffic fatalities. Among the dead were 77 year old Nick Cortese of Clovis and 33 year old Charles Shafer of Tulsa in separate crashes, a drowning victim Herb Frayer of Fort Worth, and 13 year old Arlis Barris of Clovis. The weekend also saw two apparent personal crisis deaths and an eighth death in an Arizona crash.

Paul Morgan Injured In Plane Crash Near Lovington

Pilot Paul Morgan of B. F. Hines Flying Service Hobbs sustained serious injuries when his dusting plane crashed near Lovington on Saturday. He was treated at Loving ton General Hospital then moved to Lea County Hospital for further care. He suffered a fractured right ankle several broken ribs and other injuries including possible hip fracture.

Eunice Couple To Return Home From Germany

Mr and Mrs Otis Gatewood and their two children Darlene and David will return this month from Germany where Gatewood has been doing missionary work. He is sponsored by the Broadway Church of Christ in Lubbock and formerly preached at the Church of Christ in Eunice. Darlene their five year old daughter is an adopted German child.

Yearwood skips state meet due to banking duties

C C Yearwood head of Loving ton civilian defense says he cannot travel for the appointment and will attend only by orders. He told the mayor the bank work prevents travel while Gov Mabry plans a Santa Fe defense heads meeting with Gen. Gage to plan local defense. He adds he will do what is ordered despite skepticism about a small town being bombed.

Missionary Talks at Tatum Church of the Nazarene

The W F M S of the Church of the Nazarene at Tatum gathered at Mrs Elvin Blevins home for a noon covered dish luncheon and an afternoon missionary service. Mrs James William Mathews gave a detailed talk on Religion and Customs in Arabia, displaying Bahrein garments. Mrs Blevins modeled the costume and a photo was taken. several members attended while Esther Fisher was absent due to illness of two children.

Reserves Ordered to Report for Physical Examinations

Capt. Elbert Shipp of Lovington and Capt. Robert T. Wright of Jal receive orders to report for physicals at Sandia Base Hospital Albuquerque on August 21 and 22. They are among the first 42 from New Mexico called and will begin active duty October 6.

Mrs. Ivey Browning of Lovington was injured last Thursday night in Roswell when she fell from a car on a busy downtown street. She was rushed to St. Mary’s hospital and is reported in stable condition.
