President Truman signals postponement of an excess profits tax plan until after the elections. He says Congress should first overcome election jitters and then thoroughly consider the tax proposal, while ruling out emergency government agencies during the Korean crisis.
Eleven men and one woman are held in Sandoval County Jail after a riot on the town’s main street during a fiesta dance. Deputy city marshall Clement Salazar, 40, was killed and two men, Sam Baca and Frank Fernandez, were wounded and transported to Albuquerque hospitals.
Santa Fe District Attorney Bert Prince faulted Police Chief A B Martinez for jailing juveniles without court orders. Prince argued such incarcerations deny youths under 18 constitutional protections accorded to adults.

American forces including the 24th Division and two other units attacked a Red bridgehead along the Naktong River, driving back 10 15 thousand enemy troops amid rain. The First Cavalry Division wiped out a new foothold near Taegu, killing 700 to 800 Reds. Despite massing across the river, the big Red push toward Taegu did not materialize as of Tuesday morning.
