The Hobbs School Board adopts a desegregation policy permitting colored and white pupils to enroll in any elementary school in the district. Zone lines remain but transfers are allowed with transportation by parents and administrative staff oversight. Bus students must attend administration designated bus schools. Continued on Page 8.
Tucumcari city trustees refused to discuss a petition to declare door to door peddling a public nuisance without homeowner invitation. The petition originated from Lovington listeners via radio station KLEA and was supported by many residents alarmed by aggressive itinerant sellers.
Season tickets for Hobbs High School 1954 football go on sale Monday August 9 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon. Price is 7.50 for five home games with the last three AA conference games. The five home opponents are Duncan Oklahoma September 17 Andrews Texas October 1 Clovis N M November 12 Carlsbad N M and Artesia November 19.
Marion Benham president of the Lea County Farm and Live stock Bureau Marvin and Rex Willingham board members attended the State Irrigation Committee meeting at Ruidosa on August 3.
The Chamber of Commerce, at a Wednesday board meeting, will launch a non profit Back to Church in September drive. It orders 1000 church sticker sheets similar to Easter Seals promotions to offer to merchants and residents for letters. Contact the chamber at 6 4651 to order.
The Lovington Town Trustees voted to condemn the airport landing strips next to the County Fair grounds and asked the CAA to close the airport to all air traffic citing hazards and safety limits. The group noted the new Lea County Lovington Airport will meet local needs once completed.
Lovington’s July financial report to the Town Trustees shows receipts of 11 275 50 against disbursements of 10 777 58 and a general fund balance of 6 344 27 as of July 31. The detail includes taxes licenses permits fines meter receipts and gas company share among other items.
A ledger lists numerous government disbursements with amounts: salaries 7252.75, sanitary department 527.37, office 123.67, municipal building 29.28, police 92.70, street 183.38, fire 9.15, insurance bonds 7.50, street lighting 328.85, general expense 76.67, jail 69.04, police car 209.93, feeding prisoners 242.15, police radio 49.05, street sweeper 122.14, legals 156.50, internal revenue collector 1077.50, withholding tax 405.30, credit employees insurance 112.50, insurance withholding 120.00, street equipment 369.00, sanitary department 206.00.
Police Chief Joe Price warned trustees that school opening may strain patrols due to fewer officers. A traffic light at 9th Street and West Avenue was approved to slow vehicles. Civic clubs were asked to consider volunteer crossing duty, and an auxiliary police force may be explored.
The Lovington community moves toward realization as the first elected board announces plans to build a clubhouse and open golf greens this month. A 120 member base funded a $50,000 site down payment, with Bill Shelton as president and Robert Ward secretary treasurer guiding progress.

The chamber of commerce reports negotiations with a major packing company to build a large facility here. A committee led by J. W. Smith, Bill Robinson, and Andy Swarthout will assist in study and planning and discuss leasing chamber real estate for the plant.
United Press reports the Young Republicans will stage a four state regional meeting in Santa Fe on August 14. State chairman Al Williams says delegates from Wyoming Colorado Utah and New Mexico will attend with Congressman Craig Hausmer of California as the main speaker.
Neila Frier was crowned Miss Lovington of 1954 at a Lovington Country Club water carnival. Miss Lela Ponder finished as runnerup as the annual pageant closes a summer of swimming lessons at the club pool.
Republican caravan led by Gov. Ed Mechem and Alvin Stockton tour New Mexico cities from Raton to Las Cruces. They start August 18 from Raton with a barbecue, pass through Tucumcari Fort Sumner Roswell Clovis and Alamogordo, ending in Las Cruces after attending Ft. Bliss events.
Emilie Dionne died from acute lung congestion during epileptic fits, according to autopsy by doctors Fontaine and Martin at a Montreal morgue. The inquiry follows a death at a Catholic retreat in St Agathe, with the coroner to determine natural death after the inquest is resumed post funeral in Corbell Ontario.
Local electrical contractor H. C. Hennington says his lawyers will appeal District Judge Robert E. Fox's dismissal of his bid to enter the state bar. The ruling upheld a requirement for a law degree from a recognized school as a prerequisite to taking bar exams. Hennington vows to pursue the case to the United States Supreme Court if needed.
