Western Union reports Russia repelling Teuton attacks and French advances in Champagne while German counterblows drive to regain ground. British and French air forces strike German cities as Allied hopes grow with American entry. Propaganda, peace rumors, and domestic mobilization fill the battle horizon as nations rearm and plan new offensives.
A roundup of state items includes June 18 Reunion of Scottish Rite Masons at Santa Fe, July 3-6 Cowboys Union at Las Vegas, and Sept 24-25 Northern New Mexico Fair at Raton. Other notes cover church dedications, wage increases for miners, Red Cross planning, flood of farm and road projects, indictments for bootlegging, and local crimes and civic actions across New Mexico.
The April Crop Reporter lists New Mexico cattle, sheep, horses, and swine losses from exposure and disease totaling thousands. Carrizozo Lincoln county sends three delegates and many citizens to the Ozark Trail convention in Amarillo Texas on June 27 28 and 29. The group includes ex Governor W C McDonald of Carrizozo Dr J W Laws of Lincoln and R L Trumbull agricultural agent for the E P & W Railway. They aim to secure extension of the Ozark Trail westward through Lincoln county.
Frank Culff of Coffeyville Kansas is in jail on a criminal charge after allegedly attacking Bergman at Webster's Dam near Cimarron with a razor. Bergman, who arrived in early March with a woman said to be Culff's wife, is in dying condition in a local hospital.
Judge Raymond R. Ryan in Grant county District Court overruled a motion for a new trial and sentenced Pablo Ybarro to die on the gallows in the county jail courtyard on Friday May 4 for the first degree murder of his sweetheart Sarah Lemos by stabbing.
