A Lovington Chamber of Commerce meeting will be held at the Big Cafe at 7 30 Wednesday night. The chamber will discuss important items and urges every member and interest as person to attend. Coffee and doughnuts will be served.
Lovington town trustees schedule an April 30 protest meeting at 7 30 PM in the Fireman's room of the town hall to discuss a 132 block paving plan totaling 580635 09. State pays 58110 54, leaving 523738 for property owners with 15 percent for admin and engineering fees and 6 percent plus plats for Lea Engineering Co. while Town Attorney Ward receives 1 percent.
The Lovington Leader will publish a special edition on its 45th anniversary on May 6 featuring many features and old time pictures. Citizens with Lea County early days photos are urged to bring them to the Leader office for free publication and permanent archival in the Leader and county clerk's offices. The paper also plans to microfilm all old files to preserve them for future generations and invites advertisers to contact the Leader office promptly.
Plans advance for a barbecue and celebration at Tatum to mark the new airport opening on May 1. The event will feature music and speeches with many candidates expected to attend.
President Eisenhower tells the Congress of the Daughters of the American Revolution that spiritual unity will secure peace for the world. He says the U S has the spiritual resources to win the cold war and avert World War III. He stops in Washington en route to New York where he will address publishers. He also names Lawrence Mumford as the new Librarian of Congress.
Tommie R Ross son of Mr and Mrs Sam Ross 112 E Texas St Hobbs has joined the 86th Anti Aircraft Artillery Missile Battalion at Dunes Park Indiana as a missile crewman in Battery D defending the Chicago area. Entered Army Oct 1953 trained at Fort Bliss Texas and formerly employed by Griffiths Inc Hobbs.
The Lea County juvenile panel heard two Eunice youths Julius Kassik 12 and Jimmy Ray Reynolds 13 charged with burglarizing the home of Harold D Sellers. Both had prior appearances on the same charges and were on probation when they allegedly reoffended. The board recommended sending them to Springer, leaving Judge Brand to decide on placement and duration.
Terry Moynihan, a World War II and Korea veteran and New Mexico motel owner, announces his bid for the Democratic nomination for Corporation Commissioner in the May 4 primary. He backs a constitutional amendment to shift rate-charges burden to utilities and pledges a businesslike administration.
Lovington Band Parent Association urges members to attend a Monday night meeting to elect new officers. Refreshments will be served. Band director F John Pullman will reveal plans for the next year.
The Lovington district court will convene Tuesday at 9 A M with Judge John R Brand presiding. The first case set is M W Call and Roger B Owning and Neville G Penrose versus Pearl E Fields.
Federal Housing Chief Cole says he has new evidence of abuses in the FHA. He mentions a former official who allegedly received payment for favors and says the man will be prosecuted if warranted. Cole, on Meet The Press, will testify first as Senate Banking Committee hearings begin on the fraud allegations.
In Las Cruces Alvin Stockton Republican candidate for governor told supporters that voters across New Mexico show greater interest in politics than ever. He said this favors candidates who speak clearly on issues and eschew empty rhetoric as he campaigns toward the May 4 GOP nomination showdown with Holm Bursom.
Donna Province and Ray Murrell, both youths from the Ohio Camp in Hobbs, left home suspected of running away to marry. Donna is 5 feet 2, 120 pounds with blond hair and brown eyes, wearing a white blouse pink top coat and blue jeans. Ray is 5 feet 10, 158 pounds with red crew cut, in a tan shirt and blue jeans, driving a dark 1939 Dodge sedan.
Hobbs police received a call from Mrs J G White reporting theft of two blue and rose hoop rugs from her clothes line between 1 and 3 pm. The rugs were taken from her home at 313 North Houston. Police are investigating the incident.
Mrs. E. A. Cogsdill of 1503 E. Main Hobbs reports eggs disappearing despite catching two boys stealing from her barnyard earlier She suspects the same youths or another party is taking the eggs and continues her complaint to police.
Andrews Texas sheriff sought extradition of Jodie Burton Tidwell 210 N Thorpe Hobbs man for a bad check exceeding 100 dollars cashed in Andrews He was arrested by the Andrews sheriff and transported to Hobbs to be processed before returning to Andrews with the sheriff for custody and booking.
The first of five election schools will be held at Tatum on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Assistant District attorney Joe Walton will supervise with Miss Eva Tatum, County clerk. Lovington judges and clerks meet at 7:30 p.m. at the courthouse for training.
John Hood of Hobbs and Orvie Reynolds were in a car crash on the Seminole highway at 7 01 PM Thursday. State patrolman Nolan Utz reported Hood treated for minor injuries at Lea County General Hospital and released. investigation ongoing to determine cause.
Lovington candidate for county clerk John Love born 1897 in Martin County Texas and long-time resident of Lovington seeks vote. Lovington Board of Education opened bids April 22 for industrial arts vocational cafeteria band transformer vault and covered passages. General construction bid low by E. E. Anderson Company of Roswell at 282040. mechanical bid low by W. B. Lum Company of Austin at 74980. electrical bid by Emery Electric Company of Roswell at 54112. Total bid for all units 410742 plus architect and bond fees. 150000 to equip units the project under construction.
Mary Hamzy returns to the Lovington Leader to lead the advertising department after a previous resignation. She resumes full charge of all advertising and is currently working on the anniversary May 6 edition.
Tom Gambill reports new office hours for the ground water basin in Lea County Court House. The office will operate 9 am to 12 pm on Tuesday instead of Wednesday. The change aims to reduce scheduling confusion and improve service for engineers visiting from Roswell each week. No other changes were noted.
Joe Philips and Deloyes Holmes represent Lovington in the State Teen-Age Road-E-O to be held in Silver City on Friday April 23 1954. They depart Lovington Thursday with Mr Howard the driver Educational instructor and return Saturday. Joe is son of Dale and Mrs Phillips a senior active in the senior play all state band reporter for Lovington Safety Club. Deloyes daughter of Hugh Holmes a junior formerly with Brownfield High School Band before moving to Lovington. Both express hopes of winning the top prize.
