Via the Grapevine reports Sheriff Charlie Trimble denies involvement and offers to swear on a Bible after Deputy Horace Burl Owens of MHubbs is allegedly targeted. Trimble refuses to confirm and jokes about a lie detector while insisting on an oath.

Noel Bering aged 46 faces assault to commit rape of a female minor and is held on $2,000 bond awaiting preliminary hearing. Charles Pinkerton Massey, 50, held on sodomy charges after arrest by Sheriff Trimble at Massey’s home in Lovington.
Otho Bilbo of Bilbo's Service Station in Hobbs says readers flock to the Lovington Leader. He notes a push for brake and light stickers due by May 1, shifting from April. He adds locals rely on the paper for timely notices and updates.
Six Lovington High School Varsity band members named to the Rafael Mendez All Star band to perform April 18 at Hobbs High School Gym. Guest soloist Rafael Mendez will join, directed by C M Stookey. Admission is 1.00 with no reserved seats. Lovington parents urged to attend.
Lovington Municipal School band department hosts an all day clinic for Lovington High and Junior High bands on Monday April 20. Eastern New Mexico University specialists C M Stookey Floren Thompson and Jas Whitsitt lead small group sessions and will conduct rehearsals. In the evening the guest directors join the Lovington Varsity band for the Band Parents Association meeting and report on the day’s work. Arrangements are handled by Roy Lee Jones Larry Crouse and F John Pylman Jr.
The Lovington Leader reports Mrs. Edith Clardy owned a blue velour divan found by two rabbit hunting boys. The sheriff retrieved it after concerns of theft. Mrs. Clardy had offered the couch to traders for five dollars but chose to give it away instead.
Hartford dispatch reports Elmer Phelps once more hints at retirement after unsuccessful attempts to quit, stating he will not try again. The quirky item notes lingering ties to his clerical work and a last effort before stepping away.

The Credit Merchants Association met in the Lea Room at the Liano Hotel for a luncheon on Tuesday April 14 with Gordon McMeen as president. A committee led by Carl Carr will study local tourist courts and propose a plan to register occupants for credit ratings.
Robert W. Botts of Albuquerque announced L. George Schubert of Hobbs as Lea County member of the Bar Committee on Professional Conduct. Schubert replaces John R. Brand who moved to the District Bench. The State Bar has 19 attorneys on the committee to handle complaints and investigations of unethical conduct among New Mexico lawyers. Clients may file complaints and committeemen may initiate inquiries. The Bar Association seeks reports of unfair attorney treatment.
Sheriff's department recovered a stolen 1946 Dodge from Por tales and, after recovering it, returned it to the owner. The car was used to attempt a theft of another vehicle and was found abandoned with a second car in a ditch at 2 a.m. near Almar Motors.
Mrs. Donanis Ashmore is reported to be recovering after several days of critical illness. She is stated to be in a Lubbock hospital.
The Hardin-Simmons University a cappella choir directed by Euell Porter will perform at Hobbs First Baptist Church 300 East Cain at 8:00 p m on April 20. Porter, former president of the Texas Music Educators Association and long time choral director, emphasizes dark tones, precision, voice balance and clear tone for success. The tour runs April 20 1926.
Lovington High School Varsity band earned an excellent rating at the Eastern New Mexico Music Festival in Portales, performing the Haldigungsmarsch Scenes From the Sierras and the Loyalty march. The group also excelled in the sight reading test and soloists and small ensembles received varied ratings. Next year the festival returns to Hobbs.
Lovington secretary Jake Hill of the Lovington Chamber of Commerce called a Retail Trade Assn meeting for Friday afternoon at the Liano Hotel to discuss observance of National Cotton Week May 11 through 16. He recently traveled to Las Cruces to meet the National Cotton Week Council and obtained promotion material for Lovington.
State Patrolman Otis Haley arrested three intoxicated drivers Sunday while en route from Lovington to Santa Fe. One suspect, Billy Watson of Tatum, pled guilty in Lea County with a $100 fine and license suspension. The other two were taken into custody north of Roswell and near Clines Corners.
The Plains Peace Officer association will meet in Odessa on April 23, per vice president Jake Ramsey. He urged all Lea County officers who can attend to join, with meetings starting at 9 am.
Doyle Henderson, former Lovington policeman, becomes assistant marshal at Tatum, replacing seriously hurt Jack Lowe after a wreck that reportedly broke both hips. Henderson previously served on the Monanhans force.

A Roundup Dance is planned at the youth center with a dinner and dance scheduled for 9 p.m. Organizers invite local youths to attend for an evening of music and socializing.
