Rain lifts Lovington mood with timely showers after a dry spell. Prairieview Old Folks Day honors pioneers as memory fades, while kittens spark Mrs. Don Anderson's cottage exchange success. The Leader aims to install a small computer to speed AP news and improve local coverage.
Despite rain and mud, Prairieview hosts the Old-Timers Day reunion with an on site dinner and barbecue. Attendees traveled from Texas to California as Mrs. Bell of Hobbs directed a program. Gloryland Quartet Roswell and Debbie Bell performed while Mrs. Kirshner of Lubbock gave the welcome and Mrs. Allman of Lovington gave the response. Church services were led by W. M. Beauchamp of Lovington and Otis Bailey of Tatum. Door prizes were awarded in the afternoon.
Lovington reports a partly cloudy night with scattered thunder and showers mainly in the afternoon. A gradual warming trend continues with a 20 percent chance of measurable rainfall today tonight and Wednesday. High reached 76 at 3 15 p m and low 61 at 4 50 a m.
Seven defendants from Hobbs Roswell and Jal were arraigned on narcotics charges with bonds set from 2000 to 3500 dollars. All pled not guilty. Charles Reynolds of Lubbock had case postponed for robbery due to absent attorney. Pete Amaro Garcia 17 Jal had case postponed two weeks for driving while intoxicated and suspended license charges.
L V Rea left this week to attend the national convention of the American Business Clubs in Springfield Illinois. He is the new Lt Governor of Ambuc District 6eA and will attend workshops and meetings to discuss the duties of Lt Governors starting Wednesday.
New Mexico Supreme Court denied Quirino Acuna’s appeal claiming he wasn’t advised of right to free counsel in juvenile court. The court upheld prior rulings, noting later transfer to district court included counseling and provision of a lawyer. Justice Oman wrote the rehearing denial aligned with a recent U. S. Supreme Court decision.
Santa Fe District Judge Joe Angel questioned if a bond plea for Refes Tijerina and three Tierra Amarilla courthouse raiders would be heard Wednesday. Defense attorney Neil Stillinger filed a motion asking for the hearing set for 11 a.m. MDT in Las Vegas, but Angel had not been contacted about date acceptance.
President Johnson will meet with King Hussein of Jordan at the White House on Wednesday to pursue a summit level effort to resolve the Middle East crisis. Hussein, in New York for the UN assembly, will be the first Arab leader to discuss the war since it began June 5, with the White House announcing the talks three days after the windup.
Hussein's visit to Washington June 28 centers on Israeli withdrawal demands from Jordanian lands west of the Jordan River and Jerusalem. Officials review the $45 million 1967 aid program tied to the Middle East crisis while Hussein seeks direct peace talks and watershed border restoration.
