Skylab astronauts completed a record 28 days in space and splashed down in the Pacific aboard the USS Ticonderoga. They launched May 25 and received a telegram from President Nixon inviting them to visit San Clemente, California, after their 11.5 million mile mission.

Hobbs to Appeal City Pollution Case Decision
Hobbs plans to appeal a May 31 judgment by District Judge Paul Snead in favor of the Environmental Improvement Agency. The suit claimed the 35 year old plant polluted 92 nearby private water wells. The city has 30 days to file an appeal and plans a sewage treatment plant by year end.

Mrs. Laura Isabell Overstreet 86 died June 20 at Highland Hospital Lubbock Texas where she had lived since 1972. Funeral arrangements by Henderson Brothers Lubbock with services at First Baptist Church Anton officiated by Rev B W Goodson. Burial in Resthaven Lovington. Survived by seven daughters including Reba Conkin and Maude Carter two sons and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Lea County commissioners appointed Dr. H Ralph Stucky of Las Cruces to coordinate the county land use study committee and its four subcommittees on agriculture environment industry and urban concerns. The panel includes Mark Smith Lovington chair Lloyd Calhoun Hobbs secretary R C Punch Jones Tatum John Boyd Lovington and Marion Benham Lovington. Subcommittees will address subdivision regulations adopted under HB170 and the New Mexico Subdivision Act within 180 days.
