Former President Herbert C. Hoover aged 88 remains in very serious condition at Waldorf Towers in New York due to anemia and a stomach ailment. Doctors report he is sleeping much of the time with slight fever reduction and more regular heart action while his two sons may visit.
Charles Evers, brother of slain Medgar Evers, seeks to settle a leadership struggle amid tense civil rights battles in Jackson Mississippi as militant groups press for action while nonviolent advocates led by Martin Luther King Jr face pressure. National protests and violence spillovers renew across the South with marches and school boycotts reported in multiple cities including Boston and Englewood New Jersey. Roy Wilkins of the NAACP criticizes rival groups CORE and SNCC for taking publicity as the NAACP supplies manpower and funds.
Lovington's city recreation program enters its second week with horseshoe tournaments at playgrounds and softball games. A Treasure Island movie plays Wednesday at 9 45 PM at the Youth Center with free admission for all youth.
