Jimmy LeMond Wins Round In Calf Roping
Lovington’s Jimmy LeMond topped calf roping with 10.9 seconds in the first go round of the 16th annual state high school rodeo championships at Santa Rosa. Other leaders include Donna Sue Kinkead in barrel racing and breakaway roping, Billy Mack Woods in steer wrestling, and Hugh Chambliss in saddle bronc. Fence Row Over Ruidoso Airport Access
Ralph Brown, private air charter operator, says a wire fence blocking his planes at the new Ruidoso airport was removed “by request” after the Village Council separated the municipal and Brown’s airstrips. A temporary injunction was sought to halt further fencing until a June 24 hearing. Brown cites a federal rule protecting an open public thoroughfare once in use.

Man Charged After Stabbing Incident In Lovington
Martin Molina Kantu 58 of Josey Courts Lovington faces assault with a deadly weapon charge after allegedly stabbing Domingo Guzman 52 of Lovington five times. Guzman remained in serious condition at Loving ton Lea General Hospital with wounds to the thigh chest face neck and near the liver. Kantu told police Guzman started the fight and pled guilty at arraignment with bond set at 1000 pending a hearing.

Rites Set For Legislator Hugh Smith in Hobbs
Funeral services are planned for Hugh L. Smith 52 prominent Hobbs resident and state representative for Leg County. Smith collapsed on the courthouse steps Friday morning and died of heart trouble after a long career with Phillips Petroleum and extensive service on local and state education boards.

Funeral services for J. R. Hale 73 known as Boss Hale will be held at 2 p.m. at Northside Baptist Church with Rev. C. W. Turner officiating.
