Clovis Mayor Ted Waldhauser announced at a city commission meeting that over five years ending in April more than 13 000 in parking meter receipts were missing. The audit followed treasurer Wendel McCormick’s resignation amid irregularities, and state Auditor Al ex Armijo received the report for review. Waldhauser cited 76 567 94 deposited versus 89 840 94 correct total from August 1961 to April 21.
A Lovington city ordinance restricts sale transportation and possession of fireworks. Sec. 17.22 prohibits keeping storing transporting or selling any fireworks in the city and forbids firing or setting off any firework within city limits.
A 17 year old named John E Smith of Tatum lost control of a 1957 Chevrolet and overturned 12.8 miles south of Tatum at about 4 22 a.m. He was uninjured and the vehicle sustained about 300 dollars in damage. State police investigated the incident.
The House subcommittee studies a bill by Rep Richard White proposing a monorail to connect El Paso Texas and Ciudad Juarez Mexico. The measure would authorize International Monorail Corp to construct maintain and operate the service. White says initial authorization was unnecessary and cites a similar presidential approval for California.
Earl T. Wilks ends his 34 years seven months of service at Lovington Post Office on June 24. Born in Josephine Texas in 1907 he moved to Lea County with his family in a covered wagon. He joined the postal service November 12 1931 as an auxiliary doing various jobs before settling into the role that spanned three postmasters Mrs Emma Coleman Mamie Love and Reese Greaves.
A 19-year-old girl attempted suicide by setting fire to her clothes at the Vien Hoa Dao pagoda in Saigon in a protest against Prime Minister Ky. The act sparked renewed Buddhist unrest as rioters faced police with tear gas and gunfire. Troops moved into Hue and Saigon to quell the demonstrations amid escalating violence.
The smoldering British tanker Alva Cape, laden with 143 000 barrels of naphtha, was cooled with foam to prevent a reflash while searchers sought more bodies. Coast Guard reported 20 dead, 12 missing, 69 survivors after the collision with Texaco Massachusetts off Shooter's Island.
Disillusioned cowboy Cecil Palmer leaves Oklahoma in June with his wife three children four mules and a covered wagon on a 1000 mile trek back to Phoenix Arizona He vows to live with the Apaches if he does not reach his destination Palmer says he aims to reclaim a land grant but finds government control and decides to return to Phoenix before starving. He criticizes city life and says traffic police in Albuquerque warn him to move on as his wagon blocks the freeway.
The Lovington Leader reports a new business opening but lists the old Lovington Machine Shop address at 401 South East Street. The correct address for Lovington Machine and Supply is 1313 South Main Street.
Two Carlsbad brothers Carl Williamson 24 and Larry Williamson 20 were found guilty by a district court jury of kidnapping armed robbery and aggravated battery. The jury recommended clemency for both and sentencing by Judge Caswell Neal awaits a pre sentence report.
Justice of the Peace heads warn that establishing state magistrate courts would require at least 1 million dollars annually, funded by draining school funds that receive 1 million dollars yearly from peace justice court fines. The caution followed District Judge Caswell S. Neal’s call for a system overhaul.
