Lovington and Lea County attorneys face a postponed hearing as Roswell moves to replace Bert Murphy as applicant for 34 100 acre feet of water per year from the Lea County basin. Hobbs Eunice and Tatum join in protest. state engineer says Roswell would take substantially all remaining rights.
Ronald Leroy Jacobs 25 Ere nest Eugene Everett 27 and Zack Garoogian 33 were arrested by Lovington Police and Sheriff's deputies on burglary and possession of burglary tools after a break in at Frank's Food Market. A car linked to the crime was stopped and searched. two pistols and tools were found. Bond set at $30 000 for each suspect.
Five cases were heard by Judge Kermit Nash in the Lea County District Court. The sessions included arraignments on charges filed by local law agencies. Gerald Edward Davenport, 28, is listed among those arraigned.
A total of 79 Lovington students made the honor roll for the fourth nine weeks of the 1966 67 school year. Recipients achieved all A's and no more than one B in academic subjects. Seniors listed include Beverly Kay Benham and others. juniors include Durward Sherman Benham among names.
Lovington Chamber of Commerce postpones public publicity building open house to June 18 after a heavy rainstorm floods the parking area. President Darrell Atchley cites poor drainage and muddy conditions as the reason for moving the event two weeks, despite the building being dry inside.
National Guard and state police mobilized dozens of troops across a 60 mile mountain area from Tierra Amarilla to El Rito after rebels of the Political Confederation of Free City States shot the Rio Arriba County Court house, wounded two officers, and held 20 hostages. Eight men arrested near El Rito carried rifles and blasting caps as authorities hunted the insurgents.
Nelson Dude Ainsworth of Milnesand dies in a head on collision near Bledsoe Monday. Funeral services set for 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Christ in Dora with graveside rites at 5:30 p.m. in Lovington Cemetery. Wheeler Mortuary of Portales leads arrangements with Smith Rogers Funeral Home assisting. Survivors include wife Marie Six Ainsworth, son Ross Ainsworth at Lackland AFB, daughter Mrs. Larry Hayes of Lubbock, Darren Hayes of Lubbock, father J C Ainsworth Milne Land, sister Mrs Elza Howard Lovington, brothers J C Ainsworth Jr. Lubbock and Alton Ainsworth of Bledsoe.
The Eastern New Mexico University board of regents honored Cliff Payne of Lovington with a resolution of appreciation for about 18 months of service and leadership in supporting the university’s high aims. He was succeeded earlier this year by Donald B. Anderson of Roswell.
Benjamin Crump, 53, died of a heart attack Sunday at a drilling rig 26 miles northwest of Tatum. He lived in Lovington 18 years and, after coroner’s inquest led by Judge Virginia Prior, his funeral was held at Victory Baptist Church. Burial followed at Lovington Cemetery under Smith-Rogers Funeral Home.
