Hospital Bond Issue Up For Vote

Property owners will vote in the general election November 8 on a 250000 bond for building four new county hospitals. Hill Burton funds of equal size likely, but local funds must be available first. State health officials warned license revocation without improvements or a new building. Lordsburg Hidalgo Chamber and hospital leaders urged support at a board meeting.

Six high school bands will join New Mexico Western College homecoming activities on Saturday. The parade starts at 10 a m with marching bands from Silver Deming Cobre Truth or Consequences Lordsburg and Hatch participating. A barbecue luncheon follows at noon in James Stadium.

In New Mexico Grazing District No 3 an advisory board election selected three year terms for W W A Winder of Deming and Fred Nunn of Deming plus Sherwood Culbertson of Lordsburg and W H Walter of Animas. The group will advise the District Manager on grazing licenses on Federal lands within the district.

Fiesta Queen Crowning at St Josephs Parish Ceremony

The annual St Josephs Church Fiesta crowned Miss Martha Gonzales queen at the La Fiesta Club on Saturday September 24 at 8 30 p m. Carlos Saucedo from the Moctezuma Club crowned her as escort Ernesto Ruiz attended by Lupe Duran. The Duchess Martha Gandara with escorts Tommy Hood and Rosie Chaires led the procession while Princess Esther Padilla with escort Edmund Salinas and Isabel Gomez joined Pablo Gandara as attendants. Dancing followed the coronation with Raymundo Saucedo and partner leading the grand march.

Annual District I convention of the Business and Professional Women's Clubs will meet in Lordsburg on October 2. Delegates from Alamagordo, Tularosa, Ruidoso, Las Cruces, Deming, Silver City, and Lordsburg will attend. State president Mrs. Mary Faulkner Payne will speak at the luncheon at K P Hall. registration starts at 9:00 a.m. at the Woman's Club building followed by the business meeting. Highway Improvements For Virden Area

A State Highway Department survey crew began work near Virden to map a new secondary highway from State Road 82 south of Virden to the Arizona line about six and a half miles. Engineer C H Muchmore said the project aims for this fiscal year with priority from the Hidalgo County road planning committee. Paul E Sowers heads the crew, in the field about 30 days, with assurances fences and property will be protected during surveying.

Lordsburg Student Sally Baker Named National Merit Semifinalist

Sally Baker, a Lordsburg High School senior, is among about 10,000 semifinalists in the 1960-61 National Merit Scholarship competition. She progresses toward a four year Merit Scholarship after a second exam, the Scholastic Aptitude Test, on December 3 and school endorsement. Finalists announced around May 1, 1961 depending on sponsor support.

TV Cable Brings World Series To Public Viewing

Lordsburg gets rapid progress on local cable service with Great States Electronics aiming to launch in time for the World Series on Oct. 5. A color World Series set at City Hall auditorium will let the public watch, with another set at the Elks Lodge for convenience during the event.
