Joyce Phillpot named administrator at Sunshine Haven Nursing Home in Lordsburg after relocating from Jennings Louisiana. With ten years in nursing homes and administrator since 1983 she seeks New Mexico license while inviting professionals to visit and volunteers to help, launching Adopt a Grandparent program. Hidalgo County seeks applicants for County Manager with October 20 deadline and Courthouse job description.

Lordsburg Council Accepts Resignation and Postpones Seat

The Lordsburg City Council accepted Councilman Chris Musquiz resignation amid the September 19 meeting. Mayor Salvador Diaz delayed appointing Arturo Talavera to the vacant seat, pending next meeting action after an executive session on legal matters. A public forum on legalized gambling is set for October 3 at 7 p.m. in the council chambers with invited state and county officials.

Arts And Crafts Fair To Be Held November 2

The annual Extension Homemaker's Arts and Crafts Fair runs November 2 from 9 to 5 and November 3 from 9 to 4 at the Lordsburg Community Center. Punt Pass And Kick Set For Saturday

The Optimist Club hosts their annual punt pass and kick contest Saturday at the Dugan Tarango field. Signups open at 10 00 AM for ages 8 through 13. Trophies go to first second and third in each age group. Free hot dogs and sodas for participants after. Contact Don Kling at 542 3753 for details.

Councilman Musquiz Resigns from Lordsburg City Council

Councilman Chris Musquiz, a Border Patrol employee, resigned after 6 1/2 years on the Lordsburg city council. He hand delivered his letter to City Hall on September 3 citing lack of quorum, long meetings, and public input as factors. He said residents complained about utility rate increases and expressed being disgusted and burnt out.

Bank Receives Five Star Rating from Bauer Financial

Western Bank of Lordsburg earned a five star rating as one of the safest banks in the United States per Bauer Financial Report data as of March 31, 1990. The award cites strong capital, low delinquencies and profitability, with Bauer noting only about one in four banks achieved the rating.

Enrichment Center Doors Opened to Public Tour

The Enrichment Center welcomed residents Friday and Saturday for public inspection. Several residents toured the building and can express views at the Lordsburg School Board meeting on Tuesday October 2. The board plans to solicit bids to tear the structure down.

Reception Held For WNMU President

A reception Thursday afternoon at Western Bank celebrated Dr. Jerry Gallentine’s appointment as president of Western New Mexico University. Co-sponsored by Western Bank, Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce and Phelps Dodge, the event outlined his plans for growth, including expanded police training and an RN nursing program, with Gallentine stressing the university’s service to the Southwest and Hidalgo County communities.
