Authorities report no violence at the Banner Mine dispute as Sheriff Oscar Allen quickly restrained out of town pickets and miners returned to work. About half the former workers may rejoin, while the CIO lacks a current contract barring union officers affidavits.
Local Boy Scouts will present Second Class badges to Don Estrada Candido Iz Louis Levario and Dale Len from troops 120 and 121 at a Monday 8 o'clock Court of Honor in Central Gym. Ivader Diaz will receive a First Class badge and a Home Repairs badge. Parents and friends are urged to attend.
Alfonso Beltri born in Morenci Arizona on June 27 1923 moved to Lordsburg where raised educated in public schools he served in CCC and was drafted Feb 17 1943. He trained in St Petersburg Gulfport Alexandria Las Vegas Langley and flew with the 15th Air Force 429th Bomb Squadron on missions over the Balkans and Germany earning Air Medal. Missing in action Oct 4 1944 later reported killed in action in Germany received Purple Heart.
The American Legion Auxiliary announces Milk Fund Week from Oct 2 to Oct 9 to support the 1948-49 milk program supplying milk to underprivileged children in the community. Mrs Moselle Messecar chairs the drive and appeals for donations from citizens, organizations, and businesses.
Lordsburg seeks merchant and business support for membership in the Highway 70 Association. The next meeting is planned in Lordsburg on October 4, with Geo P. Jeffus credited for initiating local involvement. Members listed include Ritter Lumber Co and Greyhound Cafe among others.
The Lordsburg P T A opens its 1948 49 year with a 7 30 p m meeting in the high school auditorium inviting all parents teachers and civic adults to join. It urges active participation to raise youth welfare and community standards and to help shape a better future for children with 5 127 696 voices backing protective laws.
October 23rd is the date for the annual Policemans and Fireman's Ball. Daugherty Bros. Orchestra will provide music at the La Fiesta Club. Proceeds go equally to Firemen and Police, supporting the Community Christmas Tree fund and the Firemen’s convention in Hot Springs.
Walter S. Ward returned Monday night from a one month visit to England. He traveled by air both ways, reporting that postwar conditions in England are harsher than during the war with stricter regulations. He noted weekly rations of butter eggs milk bacon and vegetables per person and said people fear war is near. He was invited to speak to the Lions Club next Tuesday noon.
Mrs. Mertice Brooks Mrs. Odie Lee Haltom Mrs. Maude Green Mrs. Ruth Cohen and Mrs. C. C Fuller traveled to Magdalena New Mexico for the Grand Temple of the Pythian Sisters and returned home on Wednesday after attending the event.
President Truman will arrive in Lordsburg Saturday at 7 20 am to press his re election bid before New Mexico voters. Governors Mabry and Anderson attend with Senator Hatch as supporters. The trip includes brief Deming stop and heavy communication setup for direct Washington contact.
The Chamber of Commerce asks all merchants to display flags on Front St by 7 00 a m Saturday morning September 25 in honor of President Truman. It notes that respect is due the President of the United States regardless of political views.
The Southwestern New Mexico golf tournament will be held at the Lordsburg golf course on Sunday September 26. Registration starts at nine in the morning. Registration fee is two dollars. Participating towns include Silver City Fort Bayard Hurley Deming and Lordsburg.
