Weekend events begin at 9 30 A M Friday with the Hidalgo County Fair Sheriff s Posse Rodeo and Old Timer Parade. A 1954 Ford with dual controls is handed to Lord sburg School driver education instructor Paul Probert to mark the start.
Public invited to attend a Friday night dance as the Mavericks prepare to meet Ifton at the local venue. Community members are urged to arrive early for seating.
Deputies traced break ins to Floyd Johns and Denen in Virden and Clifton area homes. Three youths identified as Don Cletus Mullens and Key Wright admitted entering seven residences, recovering much loot. Suspects, from Greenlee County, held on charges as investigations extended to Deming and Las Cruces.
The Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce urges residents and visitors to attend a three day event with Western attire and playful bull pen activities. No one will be forced to participate and organizers promise a lively town celebration with colorful costumes and beards to add fun.
Prizes for the most artistic beard and the longest beard will be determined by judges and presented at 10 00 P M on Saturday September 18 at the Street Dance on Main Street at the intersection of U S Highways 70 and 80.
Samuel C Anthony manager of the El Paso social security office announced a new Social Security provision for survivors of deceased workers. The rule assists those previously ineligible because the work was not insured under the old law. Eligible survivors must have at least a year and a half of work and the worker died between 1939 and August 31, 1950. contact the El Paso office promptly.
Jack Armstrong, jailed in Lordsburg for the Ruby Cardenas killing, agreed to a lie detector examination in Albuquerque regarding any link to Cricket Coogler whose body was found buried in a shallow grave about two years ago. Authorities pursue possible connections between the two cases.
Lordsburg New Mexico station KVAR-TV agrees to run spot announcements about the County Fair and Rodeo on September 17 and 18 at no charge. Dwight Harkins manager notes large viewing area, prices for paid 20 second and 10 second slots, and requests event details for artwork.
Mrs. W. F. Winters of New Mexico is named by National President Mrs. P. A. Laringson to serve on the National Executive Committee women of the American Legion Auxiliary. She becomes Vice chairman of the National Poppy Committee and has held multiple state and district roles since 1950, including state president in 1954 and achieving a 1952 membership quota.
A group of Democratic candidates will be in Lordsburg at noon on Tuesday September 21 1954 to meet supporters and voters of Hidalgo County. The visit aims to introduce the candidates and create voter acquaintance.
Hidalgo County Clerk urges all residents to register for the General Election on November 2. Qualified voters must be state residents for one year, county residents for 90 days, and precinct residents for 30 days. Party changes and precinct moves must be completed by October 14, with the clerk’s office open until 5:00 PM.
