Hidalgo County Fair Opens With Parade and Events

The tenth Hidalgo County Fair opens Friday morning after the Old Timers parade at 10. Judging in the exhibit building begins at 9 and livestock judging follows the parade. Ed Hitson, fair manager, says this year’s fair is the best yet. The Elks Club sponsors the junior call sale at 2 pm. A street dance Saturday night, by the Hidalgo County Chamber, features The Falcons. Prizes will be awarded for best dressed man and woman.

Old Golf Course Ready For Golfers

Old golf course about nine miles from town on the Silver City road prepares for use. Sixteen workers cleared fairways and greens and Charlie Williams reports the course in playing condition. Call Pete Chase to enroll and plans include a club, local tournament, and teachers urged to use the facility.

Mitchell Wins 145 Dollar Who's Who Contest

Ena Mitchell guessed the celebrity Leo Cohen to win the 145 dollar prize after three weeks of a Who's Who contest. Diaz drew the winner from 519 entries with 280 correct clues, while 176 guessed the name and 63 were invalid. The jackpot resets to 40 dollars for the next week.

Youth Loses Life As Home Burns

Santiago A Guerrero age 11 died in a house fire at 310 Woods St early Sunday. The front bedroom occupant likely woke as heat and smoke rose from the back room. he was found between rooms. Survivors include his parents sister Mary and six siblings and relatives. A funeral was set at St Joseph's Church with burial at Shakespeare Cemetery.

Formby Named New Assistant at St Payard VA Hospital

Donald E B Formby has been appointed assistant manager of the Fort Bayard Veterans Administration facility replacing Joseph C Mackney. Formby, a native of Texas born December 28 1914, has served in VA since 1945 with postings in Dallas Kerrville Long Beach and Washington and has been in his current post since April 1957. Old Timers Parade Opens Hidalgo County Fair Rodeo

The tenth Hidalgo County Fair and Sheriff's Posse Rodeo opens with a Friday 10 am Old Timers Parade. Forming on Fourth Street before proceeding to Main and Railroad Avenue, the route ends at the high school. Leo Cohen chairs. Lordsburg High School band leads. many floats join from local groups. Gilbert Buvens co chairs as the reformed Sheriff’s Posse, 33 strong, led by Leroy McCarty and Roy Fie, with riders joining from area pos ses including possible entries from Silver City Deming and Duncan Aziz.

Parade Judges Named by Chamber of Commerce

The Douglas Chamber of Commerce announces parade judges for floats bicycles and western attire. Judges include John Meeks Douglas Chamber president Ted Spori Frank Fair D K McNear and Orville Oldham. Mid night street dance judges include MecNear Mrs Rex Kipp Sr and Bill Weber. Prizes are a $25 Stetson hat and a $25 Amin gift certificate. A luncheon at Dewey Jones Restaurant will honor the judges.

Whiting Bros Open Lordsburg Station

The Whiting Bros service station in Lordsburg opened this week with Harold Elstro as manager. The new facility on Highway 80 joins 128 Whiting locations across seven states. Goodyear representative John English attended the event, with home office in St. Johns Arizona and district manager John Mayhan.
