Rainbow Girls install Betty Bradford as Worthy Advisor

Betty Bradford was installed as Worthy Advisor of the Rainbow for Girls at a public ceremony in the Masonic hall on Sunday afternoon. Officers installed included Bar tare McCants as installing officer and Margaret Richards as installing marshal, with a reception featuring yellow and white daisies and candles.

Items Needed for Old Timer Day Display

Lordsburg merchants provide window space for Old Timer Day during Fair Week. The Old Timers Association seeks antiques pictures or family keepsakes for display on Sept. 19. Contact Mrs Troy Jones or other committee members by phone to arrange contributions.

Bids Open for Hidalgo County Fair Concessions

The Hidalgo 4H club will operate soft drink concessions at the Hidalgo County Fair on Sept 18 26 and 21. Three concession spots remain open for non profit groups offering candy gum popcorn caffe hot dogs hamburgers coffee and more with bids due by Sept 16 at 1 00 p m to D W Dunagan secretary Hidalgo Co Fair Board. The board may reject any bid and awarded groups may obtain extra merchandise if not duplicating others.

County Rodeo Queen contest opens to all county girls

A new rule allows any single county girl aged 16 to 19 who is a permanent resident to enter the Hid algo Rodeo Queen. She must ride in the opening parade and attend rodeo ceremonies on Sept 20 and 21, with judging split 50 50 between personality and horsemanship.

Lordsburg School Cafeteria Enlarged and Expanded

The Lordsburg school cafeteria was enlarged to connect to the old home economics room by an archway. Mrs. I. W. Cory manages, aided by Mrs. Doris Smith Mrs. Winfred Kuykendall and Julia Arvizo. Substitutes are Mrs. Carmen Levario and Miss Elsie Smith. Donations from Richins Bros. of Animas valley included 35 watermelons and 10 bags of onions. On Thursday noon September 4, 326 children were served a menu of milk, creamed turkey on toast corn buttered peas and carrots sliced tomatoes bread oleo sliced peaches and oatmeal cookies.

Arrangements Made for Old Timers Day

Hidalgo plans Old Timers Day on Friday September 19 with a 9 30 a m parade by the Old Timer association led by Harold Z Scofield and a 2 to 4 p m history tape session in the city hall auditorium directed by Lou Bachly of Silver City. The Old Timers dinner is at 5 30 p m in the Legion hall served cafeteria style. Membership requires 30 years residence in New Mexico.

The V F W announces Bataan Post 3099 will hold its regular meeting on Thursday September 18 at LaFiesta Hall instead of Friday the 12th. All members are urged to attend the important meeting and remember the new date.

Western College President to Speak at Lordsburg Luncheon

New Mexico Western College President J Cloyd Miller will address the Lordsburg Women's Club at the annual fall luncheon on Monday September 15. He discusses What You Can Do To Help Believe the Teacher Shortage. Mrs Miller will accompany him and attend as a guest. The event is at Hotel Hidalgo at 1 00 pm with Mrs A A Kemnitz and other guests. Tragedy Strikes Local Family As Teen Driver Dies

Janice Marie Romaine, who would have turned 14, died Saturday after the pickup she drove overturned on Banner mine road a mile south of town. Three high school boys—Keith Johnson, Lonnie Little, and Dale Atwater—were with her, en route to football practice. Janice, daughter of Floyd T and Mrs. Romaine, was born September 17, 1938 in Watson Oklahoma. The Romaine family recently moved here. Mr Romaine is an engineer.

Hidalgo County Fair and Rodeo Schedule Planned

The Second Annual Hidalgo County Fair runs Sept 19 to 21 with livestock judging starting Sept 18 at 2:00 pm and public exhibit viewing through Sept 21. Events include an Old Timer parade, a rodeo with six events, 4-H livestock sale, carnival, and a Friday night rodeo dance at La Fiesta Club.
