Lordsburg School Board heard that enrollment totals 1,136 excluding kindergartens, short of the 1,180 projection by about 44 students. Superintendent Dr. Joel Price said the shortfall will cost roughly $43,000, forcing tighter programs while he notes no single pattern behind the decline.
Dr. Edward Reisman begins service in Lordsburg Hidalgo County at Casa de Medicina corner Seventh and Pyramid Streets. Temporary site aims to become private practice with support from Public Health Service and Hidalgo Health Care Council as permanent offices are planned.
Hidalgo County hosts its 26th annual County Fair this weekend with a packed schedule. Highlights include the Bank Robbery and Hanging act, Old Timers Parade, livestock shows, and multiple exhibits across Friday and Saturday, plus a Thursday livestock arrival and Old Timers gathering at Lordsburg School Cafetorium.
Price said the board budgeted 14000 for SWISH to operate the Yucca Center in Lordsburg to aid six students in the Lordsburg school system needing extra services. The state requires regular records checks and on-site visits. The panel discussed moving a bus boarding site near Railroad Avenue amid parent concerns.
At a Virden meeting the board passed a Department of School Finance required resolution and accepted a Soil Conservation Service offer to dig a drainage ditch on Lordsburg School property. Price noted a dangerous crossing area for students near railroad tracks and said the state Transportation Department will send an employee to inspect the pick up site.
Republican Don Trubey predicts he can beat incumbent Harold Runnels in November. He campaigns in Grant Hidalgo to gain support and attends the Hidalgo County Fair opening in Lordsburg. He faults Runnels for spending on ads and notes Trubey’s fundraising limits while endorsing Ford and Schmitt for national offices.
A local Tax Foundation study shows Hidalgo County families have more take home pay as inflation eases. After essentials, about 28 percent of income remains for other spending while taxes total $3 490 per family annually.
