Motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel paused in Lordsburg for a lunch break at El Charro Cafe and signed autographs for a group of local youngsters. He has gained fame through numerous television appearances performing death defying motorcycle jumps.
Lordsburg City Council weighs county lease and financial aid for the ailing Lordsburg Golf Club. Richard Dockum reports a draft agreement calls for county lease and $12,000 annual support while the council notes possible county reluctance. Mayor White urges attendance at Hidalgo County Commission meeting.
Enrollment is open at Lordsburg Community College for classes including Art Spanish GED testing and the Juvenile Law Procedure course. Minimum of 10 students required for offering tuition is 28.60 for a two credit hour course plus a 5 fee for first time Western enrollees. Refunds apply if class does not materialize and a definite schedule will be announced later.

Ten years after rumors, Phelps Dodge announces copper mining will restart at Tyrone after a 45 year halt. Robert G. Page says open pit mine near Silver City will take 3 to 4 years and employ about 1100. $100 million planned for mine and smelter. ore to be shipped to Douglas for treatment during construction.
