The Works Progress Administration approves paving for 54 blocks of fully paved streets joining a new city hall and county library projects. Council praises the chance to relieve dust and share the cost with the government, noting the opportunity may not return and urging property owners to participate.
The first meeting of the newly organized Chamber of Commerce board and officers was held at City Hall. Mayor Brown and L Brown led the session, promising city council cooperation and business body support for chamber projects. The regular monthly meeting of directors was announced for the secretary’s office at City Hall.
Edna Colbath Forest, with husband and son, comes to town to settle affairs of late father Charles M. Colbath. Mrs. Forest receives expressions of sympathy from many as the family mourns the loss of a well known citizen. The 14-year-old Forest girl has been a star in singing both popular and old songs for eight years.
Jones, son of Mrs Love, stationed at Galveston Texas, works with the Standard Oil Division of Indiana. He holds a steady job with the refinery as Rufus visits from home, drawing friends and family from Saturday through Wednesday.
Former county agent Brown arrived back in Roswell with his family from an Oregon vacation trip and starts a new assignment at the same office. He retains the same support and duties as in his previous county.
Deming E Johnson and W K Robinson drove over to Lordsport in a gasoline transport task. Robinson’s son reportedly delivers about one hundred thousand gallons monthly.
Mary Ellen Shelly accompanied by her mother went to a hospital in El Paso for a full course of science and tire training. Both she and her mother expressed strong belief in success and the benefits of the program for her vocation.
The Johnson Ice Cream and Malted Milk Shop debuts in the city with a beautifully appointed interior and modern furnishings. It offers ice cream and sherbets at the fountain or for take home, plus a merchandise department featuring Indian gums and Greek hand woven Persian wool rug orders. The owners express strong confidence in Lordsburg’s growth and prosperity as the shop enhances street beauty with brilliant lighting.
Mr and Mrs John H Clark and their son Thomas Banks spend the week with the parents of both Clark and Banks in Lordsburg and Animas.
Miss Marshallene Goodsell from Alamogordo Miss Vollma Hill from Silver City Miss Loulke Wamel from El Paso business college and Warren Fuller from the University of Texas were home for the Labor Day holiday.
Mr and Mrs Frank Meyer and their son Charles stayed with Superintendent and Mrs J Cloyd Miller in Las Cruces over the weekend as guests of hospitality reflecting cordial community ties.
Mrs. K Peterson and Miss Vivian Graham from the Public Welfare Office at Deming attended a meeting with local welfare officials. Miss Edith Graham, recently returned from France after studying French, accompanied her sister. Edith plans to enter the University of New Mexico to pursue a BA degree.
A cattle grading demonstration at the Brock ranch drew participants from four New Mexico counties, two in Arizona, and several from Mexico. Key speakers included J. K. Wallace from the Department of Agriculture and W. H. Tolbert, with support from H Meerscheidt and local leaders.

Robert E. Witherell Sidney Owens and Miss Margaret Holt traveled from Safford to Paso for a Labor Day visit with Miss Holt’s sister Mrs Sam P Ful ton. They returned Monday afternoon.
Miss Fleanor O Meara says TT circled for a parking spot while R B Horton the public accountant and his associate Bixler, auditing county and city records, got lost trying to locate Superintendent Miller's home adding to city wide perplexity.
Mr and Mrs Prank Stengle and son Harvey just returned from a ten day vacation with Mr and Mrs Tom McCabe It was among the most delightful trips they have taken in years Mrs Stengle also visited her sister Mrs Lloyd Hill whom she had not seen for twelve years
Mr and Mrs Nat Gammon hosted a family dinner Tue day evening in their apartment. Attendees included Mr and Mrs E M Fisher and daughters Ruth and Louise, Mr and Mrs Earle Kerr and son Jack, Marshall Puller and J A Jones who all enjoyed an elaborate chicken dinner.
On September 24 the Observation Section of the Air Corps advanced flying school at Kelly Field Texas will fly to Lordsburg Army Airdome. Twenty three airplanes arrive between 8 39 and 9 52 a m and depart between 8 50 and 11 03 a m. The flight carries twenty seven people including ten student officers nine flying cadets four commissioned instructors and four enlisted mechanics. Gasoline and oil will be needed at Lordsburg. The planes are Observation and Basic Training types. The mission aims to familiarize students with fields landings and takeoffs at high altitudes.
Two popular region residents were wed Sunday at 2 PM in a Methodist ceremony led by Rev Bryan Hall. Miss Nora Cox of Separ and Maurice H Conner of Lordsburg exchanged vows as family members attended. After a buffet lunch, the couple departed for a motor trip through Arizona and will reside in Maurice’s home.
Miss Lois Swaggart and Nathan MacCarty of Douglas marry at the Baptist church with Rev. M. C Moore officiating. Attendants Miss Gladys Whisnant and Ray McCarty. Guests from Douglas and Lordsburg attend a Hidalgo Grill reception before an unannounced honeymoon planned to Carlsbad Caverns.
The Church of Christ under Minister J. I. Brimberry announces updated service times for Wednesday and Sunday. Bible School starts 10 a.m. with Lord's Supper and preaching at 11 a.m. Evening services begin 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday prayer and study meet at 7:30 p.m. Topics Sunday include The Obedience Of Vision at 11 a.m. and Life In The Jerusalem Church at 7:30 p.m.
Dunagan, two years Hidalgo county patrol foreman, has accepted a prestigious post in California as instructor in charge of the riding academy at Lake Elsinore. He will bring some of his own mounts and leaves many grateful friends behind.
Senator Lee Brown Atwood with Attorney E Forrest Sanders and Chief Deputy C A Conner went to Sonora Mexico visiting the J T Austin ranch. Amelio Acosta served as camp custodian and stated they caught at least one fish each.
Last Sunday's lesson on School Days drew 28 members and visitors. Next Sunday's topic is Christianity In School Life with a Bible drill. All young people ages ten to fifteen invited to join, time changed to six thirty, listen for the bell at six.
Miss Margery Fairly, after two years nursing in El Paso, will attend Western Reserve University in Cleveland to take a major course in public health nursing.
Mr and Mrs W H Curley Walters visit Lordsburg with their young daughter Betty. Billy Kimberly travels to El Paso for the Olney Motor company on business this week.
Mr and Mrs F L Powers of Tucson greeted Lordsburg friends Wednesday morning. Mr Powers is a well known Southern Pacific man in the Arizona city. Mrs Powers is the former Miss Patty Moran of Deming, daughter of Dr and Mrs M J Moran.
Captain J Cloyd Miller greeted his former commander as a detachment from Mt Huachuca, including Major Edwin Grimmer and other officers, passed through Lordsburg en route to Sam Houston in San Antonio. The group, with two reconnaissance cars and a baggage car, is to participate in tests of a proposed new infantry division beginning September 1. The unit was photographed with Captain and Mrs Miller and has ties to training at Fort Minchuea last summer.
Miss Cuea Talavera and Louie Carmona were married at St Josephs Catholic Church with Rev Father Carnet officiating Sunday at 10 am. The ceremony featured bridesmaids and groomsmen, a train bearing gown, and a reception at the bride’s home followed by a ball. The couple plan to live near the Frank Carrasco home.
Bradberry, a famed fiddler with a 25 year record of honors, entered the Herald-Post fiddler’s contest and placed third as prizes were awarded.
Claude FE. Wood, previously chief of the Contract Department in the Land Office, is now head of the Grazing Department with five clerks and an assistant. The promotion is described as a fitting acknowledgment of his abilities.

Farle, head of the State Revenue Commission Income Tax Division, joined for Labor Day. Joe Sullivan and Mrs Tom Pendleton spent the weekend at Cloverdale with Mrs Pendleton.
Lordsburg public schools opened the 1097-38 term with 776 pupils on the first day, over last year’s enrollment, despite three additional teachers. The high school shows a small gain while overall crowded conditions persist. Mil ler reports a November closure for teachers to attend a state education meeting, with Christmas and summer breaks set around those dates.
District Highway Engineer J. P Church and his wife visited Lordsburg for a three day period of rest from official duties after a period of heavy workload in his district.
The F E club gathered at Mrs. J H Baxter's home on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the birthday of Mrs A B Bowman. Members presented her with useful gifts and delicious refreshments were served. Children present included Mark Bowman Terry Crider and Dorothy Sundgren.
Miss Fugenie Brandon of Coolidge public school faculty was Sunday guest of Mrs. Morelle Messecer of Lordsburg school. The two women were co-eds at the University of Arizona.
Colson, a known cattleman and dairyman, buys the 6 P. Hotel opposite the Southern Pacific station from Jaaac Van Meter. He plans a first class rooming house with 15 rooms inside and three outside apartments and will personally manage the operation after returning to Lordsburg from nine months in Arizona.
Darlene Moses, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Moses, has recovered from a serious illness at DeMoss hospital and is now back home.
Lordsburg Highs Mavericks announce 32 players in uniform as they prepare for the September 25 opener against Las Cruces. Coach Pierce fields a large veteran core with seven lettermen returning and new uniforms for the Mesilla Valley clash. Schedule includes Hurley, Wilcox, Silver City, Deming, Austin High, and Duncan with open dates on October 1 and 9.
Miss Delilah Claunch and V. O Hunt of Tucson were united in marriage at the Edington home Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Bryan Hall officiated with attendants Miss Mary Jane Budlong and Vance Daniels. The couple will reside in Tucson after returning there Wednesday.
Mrs Chas. Conner spent Monday in Las Cruces with her daughter, Mrs. Sam Dabbs.

Mrs Clara Roberts of Glendale Arizona visiting her aunt Mrs Anna Ownby. Formerly Miss Clara Gaskeld she was an early teacher in Lordsburg Kansas and later taught in Safford and Solomonville. In 1495 she married Rev David Roberts at the Ownby ranch near Kardburg. they had three daughters who also became teachers. During the war era Rev Roberts was active in the M C A at Camp Cody Deming.
Mayor C L Brown president of the State Barber Commission attended the state barber convention in Albuquerque along with Mrs Brown Mrs Ollie Williams and Miss Josephine Bailey. They heard addresses by Governor Tingley and other dignitaries. The next state convention will be held in as well.
Charlie Sullivan and his wife from Pasadena stay with his brother Walter Sullivan in Lordsburg for a week. They report good success in California, a situation not entirely welcome by their Lordsburg friends.
Mr and Mrs P M McInnis and daughter Dorothy and Mr and Mrs R B Lundgren and daughter Dorothy age 3 faced a frightening incident in Mogol lon mountains. A four foot rattlesnake slit from the tent area as the children slept, bringing a distressing turn to a quiet fishing excursion.
