Fifteen new teachers join Lordsburg schools system

Lordsburg Municipal School announces fifteen new teachers across high school junior high Central and Southside campuses. New Mexico State Fair Opens in Albuquerque

The New Mexico State Fair runs September 12 through 22 in Albuquerque with over $14,000 in premiums and a large beef cattle show. Championship rodeo fills the Coliseum the first nine nights, then Don Ameche presents International Showtime Circus with four performances.

Enrollment Rise in Lordsburg Municipal Schools

Enrollment figures show 1070 pupils registered at end of first school week in Lordsburg for 1958-59. High school 286, junior high 287, Central 264 with declines at Wilson 131 and Southside 102. Building upgrades include air conditioning in multiple buildings and interior redecorations.

Lions Sponsor Heart Fund Drive and Activities

The Lordsburg Lions Club voted to sponsor the annual Heart Fund drive in February at their weekly meeting. Homer Brooks was named chairman by Lion President Broda McAlister. The club also planned a broom sale and a traveling girls basketball time event.

Sabra Humphrey earned a bachelor of arts in secondary teaching and Guillermo Lopez a master of arts at the close of the summer session in Silver City. No graduation exercises were held this summer.

Hidalgo County Farm Bureau Meeting Scheduled Sept 14

The Hidalgo County Farm Bureau plans its annual meeting for Saturday September 14 at the Cafetorium starting 1 p.m. with an afternoon and evening of programs including a financial report, resolutions, officer elections, a talent contest, door prizes, and a children’s picture show at 2 p.m. A barbecue beef supper begins at 5 p.m. President Virgil W. Jones urges members to attend to shape policy on a major crop facing crisis.

District Conservation Supervisors Election Ballots Soon Mailed

Landowners in the Animas Valley and Virden Valley Soil and Water Conservation Districts will receive ballots by mail to vote for two candidates for three year terms. Virden Valley ballots open publicly September 12 at the Lordsburg SCS office, Animas Valley ballots open September 20 at the Lordsburg SCS office.

Juniors Start Getting Ready For Coming Year

The junior class held its first meeting on Friday August 30 to elect sponsors and form committees. Gene Rogers and Carolyn Ledbetter were chosen sponsors. Reporters are Laura Griego and Linda Hall. Smiley Burnette Set for Personal Appearance at Posse Rodeo

Smiley Burnette motion picture and TV star known as Frogs will headline Sunday’s Posse Rodeo at 2 p m. He appears with Gene Autry and Roy Rogers and will be on CBS this fall in Petticoat Junction. The Old Timers Parade starts at 10 a m with route to the fairgrounds, livestock judging to follow, and a 4H FFA sale at 2 p m Friday.
