High school expansion plans include five classrooms and a gymnasium plus a commons building with cafeteria auditorium and arts facilities. The $2.8 million bond, largely funded by Phelps Dodge property taxes, aims to serve growth from 260 to 470 students since 1972. Absentee ballots reportedly opposed the measure.
City fathers vote to recognize the housing authority for the community’s low rent housing program sponsored by the Department of Housing and Development.
Manuel Renteria of the housing authority reports 92 houses rented at the low rent project with plans to fill eight more. He notes the current residents include diverse ethnic groups and emphasizes prioritizing low income tenants as high income occupants depart. The council heard the annual development report and city services support.
Police halted three kidnap suspects after a chase from Phoenix toward Lordsburg. Four hostages were released near Willcox, Ariz, including a child. Suspects identified as Jerry A. DePorto 25 and two unidentified women linked to earlier crimes in Phoenix and Casa Grande.
The Hidalgo County Fair returns this weekend with a full slate of events. Entries open September 4 with livestock judging and exhibit displays, followed by showmanship contests and the OldTimers Banquet at the High School cafeteria. September 6 features breakfast, charro events, and exhibitors’ showcase concluding with the closing of exhibits.
Lordsburg has been designated as an official National Bicentennial Community in a letter to city councilman Harold Jorgenson from ARBA regional director S L Abbott. The letter outlines details of the ARBA flag and certification presentation ceremony to be scheduled soon, with Jorgenson chairing the Bicentennial Committee.
