Lordsburg School Board Approves 1969-70 Budget and Projects

Lordsburg Board of Education met September 2 1969 in the administration building. The final budget of 830223 includes 553169 state funds 91000 county 32000 local and adds four teacher aides and two library aides. Title I projects expand remedial reading English and math across elementary to high school with summer programs. Ben Cochran Electric Service won a 1456 bid to improve Central School lighting. Wilson Elementary classroom construction progresses with an extension to September 15 for completion.

Mavericks Meet Deming Wildcats Friday Night in Opening Game

The Deming Wildcats visit the Mavericks for a season opener at 8 p.m. Coach Dewey Bohling notes the team is healthy but a recent flu outbreak knocked out about a dozen players, affecting readiness. The Mavericks aim for a tougher line and an improved run under captain Steve Harper while enforcing no alcohol at the game.

Season Ticket Holders To Have Reserved Seats

The cheerleaders sell season tickets for five home games at five dollars for adults and three dollars for students. A town canvas sale is set for Thursday night September 4 at 5 p.m. Season ticket holders will have a reserved section in the stands.

Few Voters Respond To Purge Notices In Hidalgo County

About 100 people have returned purge notices to Hidalgo County Clerk Emma Scofield asking to be restored to the registered voting list. Notices warn that nonresponse by September 15 will remove names and require re registration if still residing in Hidalgo County.

Rodeo Queen Contest Highlighted in Old Timers Parade

Miss Jan Miller of Bayard New Mexico and other rodeo queen candidates ride in today's Old Timers parade starting 10 AM with entries lining up by 9 30 on Fourth Street The event is organized by K P Lodge with divisions junior and senior prizes plus a sweepstakes trophy. Additional rodeo events include a Friday horsemanship contest at 2 30 and rodeo performances at 7 30 PM Friday and 1 30 PM and 7 30 PM Saturday Admission to the rodeo is 1 25 for adults and 75 cents for children under 12.

School Girl Hurt When Hit By Auto

Patsy Rodriguez, 10, was struck by a car on Second Street near Central School around 12:50 p.m. The pedestrian ran from behind a parked car and was taken to hospital by her father Cruz Rodriguez. Gloria Louis Lytle, 16, was cited for failure to use due care.

Rodriguez Bound Over To District Court

Joe Rodriguez was bound over for action of the district court after a preliminary hearing last Friday. He faces a third degree felony charge of aggravated battery for the shooting of Rodolfo Chavez Jr. Edward M. Campbell serves as the defendant’s court appointed attorney.

Judge Orders Grand Jury Impaneling in Hidalgo County

Judge Norman Hodges ordered a Hidalgo County grand jury to be impaneled on September 12 with 24 names to be drawn. The action follows a petition filed August 25 seeking a grand jury, the first in years, and a similar order was issued for Grant County with October 6 tentative date. The 12 jurors will examine matters within the grand jury powers, with help from the state attorney general’s office amid staff shortages in the district attorney’s office.

Louis Rosales Critically Wounded in Vietnam Patrol

Marine Lance Corporal Louis Rosales was critically wounded by a friendly artillery burst on a platoon patrol in Quang Nam on August 31. He is the son of Salvador Rosales and Leila DePaoli and was reported to be holding on and en route to the United States aboard a Red Cross hospital ship.

First PTA Meet Of The Year In Lordsburg

The Lordsburg Parent Teacher Association will hold its first regular meeting at 7 30 p m Monday September 8 in the cafetorium. Incoming officers for 1969 70 will be installed. The meeting will discuss projects proposed budget and executive committee recommendations. A program on What PTA is All About will be presented and refreshments served.
