Hidalgo County Rodeo Queen Contest Set For September

Hidalgo County Sheriff's Courtroom hosts 29 members to judge the Queen contest opening at 8 am on September 16 at the arena grandstand. Entries must reside in Hidalgo County and be 14 to 19 years old. Western riding rules apply. horsemanship and personality scores. Candidates may ride in the opening day parade and attend all rodeo grand entries.

Plans For Fair Rodeo and Parade Under Way

Local celebration in Hidalgo County runs September 15 to 18 with fair books printed and ads sold. The Sheriff's Posse repairs the rodeo arena while the Chamber hires the Falcons from Douglas for a street dance. Old Timers set parade marshal and 4 H and FFA members prepare exhibits and entries.

Telephone Man To Speak At Lions Club

Lloyd Dodds public relations manager for Mountain States Telephone Company will address the Lordsburg Lions Club at the next meeting on September 6. His talk titled The Magic Of Sound uses more than two thousand lars of demonstration equipment to trace the history of sound from its beginnings to today.

School to hold on Monday after air holiday note

Rotie Wesley Freeburg, superintendent of schools, states the state does not observe a holiday for schools on Day. Therefore schools will operate Monday September 5 as usual.

Former Mayor Charles C. Martin Dies Sunday

Charles Calvin Martin 82 died Sunday at a local hospital. Funeral services were held at Heather Chapel. He served as Lordsburg mayor, bank president, and on the Selective Service Board. Survived by wife Mary Alice, four daughters, one son Calvin, nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and siblings.

Vinal Plans for Farm Bureau Convention Completed

Hidalgo County Farm and Livestock Bureau board met August 26 to finalize plans for the county convention on September 3. The event starts at 3:30 pm with registration for door prizes before then, featuring Leonard Johnson from Salt Lake City as main speaker, a 3:30 barbecue, 7:30 talent elimination contest, movies and children’s activities. All members and guests are urged to attend.

Police Chief Suspended and Officer Fired Over Teen Arrests

In Lordsburg New Mexico Chief of Police Frank Aguilera was suspended after a Grievance Board found him guilty on three charges related to locking six teenage boys in a jail cell and using alcohol influenced judgment. Officer Lalo Sanchez was fired after a heated dispute over detention and communication with parents.
