Hidalgo County 4 H groups and Home Demonstration Club report lively meetings led by County Agent and Olive Cruse. Programs included fashion trends, sewing demonstrations, leadership talks, and plans for community organization with emphasis on kitchen upgrades and efficient home projects.
A new evening class for out of school girls will be organized in the High School Home Economics Department. Miss Gustafson will teach starting Monday November 6 at 7 00 PM. Attending girls include Amparo Gusman Lupe Peralta Concha Peralta Esteer Hortencia Galindo Belen Montez Jessie Juanita Gonzales Flora Lopez Trancito Chavez Manela Fernandez and Vera Hernandez.
Western Star Temple Pythian Sisters hosted six visitors from Deming Mmes George Ackerman Ed Milliken Frances Chandler Nadine Bingham H E Dines and Miss Rose Ackerman The event led by Lordsburg Temple with Moselle Jones presiding included speeches by Mrs Luella S Clark and Willard E Holt Mrs Dines received the Temple degree and refreshments followed the ceremony.
The Isador Posner Sign Company announced a project to complete what may be the largest complete neon sign in Arizona. It stands 1% feet high and 22% feet long, needing about a third of a mile of tubing, to adorn the Hidalgo tourist camp at Lordsburg New Mexico owned by W A Short and son. The sign will be built in three sections and shipped for assembly at Lordsburg.
Cooperators under the 1939 Farm and Range Program must finish practices by December 31, 1939 and submit payment applications by March 31, 1940. Earlier 1937 and 1940 dates refer to other Farm and Range applications and parity programs.
John Richard Pack outlines Bible School at 10 a m with classes for all ages and competent teachers. Morning worship at 11 a m includes Lords supper song service and preaching. Evening service topics include The Gifts of The Holy Spirit and future two week subjects The Ordinances that keep us Christians Why call ye me Lord and do not the things I command you Restoration of the New Testament Church and Remove Not the Ancient Landmarks. The Lord asks for four hours of 168 each week.
Gary Dreyer celebrated his third birthday with a party on Friday October 20 at the home of Mr and Mrs T R Taggart. Children played outdoors and won prizes of whist les and blowers. A birthday cake surrounded by stick candy dolls adorned the table. The cake and dolls were made by Garys mother Mrs Arthur Dreyer. Guests included Noble Kirkpatricks Sr Billy Garrett Jackie Crysler Walter Lee Ray Jack Cochran Mark Bowman and Charles Pirece.
Gordon Farrar 28 died when his auto collided with an electric train near Los Angeles. Survived by widow Nadine Cavaland two sons and his parents J J Parvar and Mere Agnes Edington Hidalgo Superintendent Louise Peixotto and Vivian Pence. Funeral set for Friday 2 30 at Church of Christ in Lordsburg with connections to Albuquerque and Oklahoma.
A Hidalgo Coffee Shop party of seven included Suprintendent FE Bowman and Creighton Bowman along with Joe H. Hill and Bil Hardy. They reported a Colorado deer hunting trip near Copper Gulch with a successful morning harvest on October 11 and noted Mrs. Grimes recovering well from major surgery.
Mrs. Agnes Edington and teachers from the county enjoyed a weekend in the Wonderland of Rocks at the Chiricahua National Monument. They traveled Saturday morning, hiked four miles, planned an eight mile trek Sunday, camped overnight, and cooked on a campfire. Others on the trip include Harry Ketman Marvin Cowan and several Mrs and Misses. Improvements recently added at the site include a ranger station at the park entrance and camping comforts like hot and cold water laundry facilities and wide canyon trails.
Mr and Mrs Stewart Robeson announce the birth of Patricia Ann at 9 11 a m October 17 in Silver City where Mr Robeson works with SCS. Lordsburg friends and former teacher Ada Coyner extend sincere congratulations.
Pastor Rev. J. W. Cox of the Church of the Nazarene will lead a revival at the Las Cruces church from November 6 to 19. Evening services start promptly at 7 15 p m with special singing and music. Public invitation extended to all residents.
Mrs BE PF Sanders hosted a farewell party for Mr and Mrs T M Glass on Saturday October 21 with a 1 pm luncheon followed by an afternoon of bridge. The Sanders home overflowed with flowers and prizes were awarded to Mrs E J Short, Mrs Mary Culberson, Mrs W C Downey, and Mrs Glass as guest prize.
A farewell party honoring Mr and Mrs T M Glasa was held Sunday October 28 at the Clayton ranch. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Tom Clayton, Mr and Mrs BE F Sand ere, Nat Gammon, Sherwood Culberson, Mary Culberson, Jimmie Sumners, Marshall Puller, Gerate Fuller, and Johnny Jones Jr. Hosts were Mr and Mrs Tom Clayton.
Edward Leslie Gilbert born September 26 1897 in Hill County Texas died October 19 at William Beaumont Hospital El Paso after extended treatment at Fort Bayard and Fort Hayard Hospitals. He lived in El Paso and Silver City where Elks and American Legion provided services with vocal solo by Doctor Tudor.
Elva Adams and Pat Costellow were married at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Bryan Hall on Monday morning October 28. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Hall with witnesses Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. W. J. Adams. Attendants included W. J. Adams, the bride’s father, Mrs. Lloyd, Mrs. Costellow’s aunt, Mrs. Claude Fuller, Lillian Ballard, and Costellow’s younger brother. The bride and groom, both from Animas, plan an extensive estate tour after the ceremony and receive many congratulatory wishes.
The New Mexico Methodist Conference united the former South and Episcopal branches with the New Mexico Mission. Bishop Ivan Lee Holt announced appointments as the Trinity Church in the southwest was dedicated. Rev. Bryan Hall stayed in Lordsburg after being elected secretary and assisting with the conference proceedings.
The F T Sewing Club met at the home of Mrs Luther Lacy on Wednesday. Members included Mrs Bowman Baxter Lewis La Salle Black Bann Scofield and others. Guests were Mrs Willis Lacey and Mrs F H Lynn of Las Cruces. Chocolate pie and coffee were served.
Captain and Mrs. John D. Burke vacation along the Pacific Coast attend the Fair in San Francisco then stop in Los Angeles where they report temperatures of 96 and 98 degrees. Tourists this week confirm the heat levels.
Lordsburg 4 H Club Orchestra will travel to State College on October 24 and record a performance to be broadcast on KOK November 14 at 7 40 pm. Directed by Mrs T B Williams the group is highly regarded in the state and in demand for its services.

The Zanner Mine employs 165 workers beyond official staff and distributes over ten thousand dollars every two weeks, highlighting the mine’s major economic impact on Lordsburg.
Near midnight on October 20 Robert E. Sutton of Grant County prowled a Duncan highway home occupied by Mr and Mrs Parsons. Ed Bellah confronted him with a 41 Colt revolver and fired after Sutton refused to leave, wounding him in the torso. Sutton was taken to Lordsburg and is reportedly recovering. no arrests have been made.
Mina Margaret Holt youngest daughter of Colonel Willard B Holt of Lordaburg married Lowell Hallard in a San Diego hotel ceremony on October 2. Hallard, longtime principal at Safford schools, now attends Ban Mesa State College and is with San Diego Public Schools. The bride previously served in government posts including secretary to Regions Conservator Hugh G Calkins in Albuquerque.
Tomorrow night October 28 the big dance of the year features dancing upstairs and games downstairs. Dancing begins at 9 30 and continues until you quit with admission one dollar. Prizes awarded for best costume and for novelty dance winners. Come in costume to compete or in ordinary clothes to attend.
The Tourism School organized in El Paso by women members of local Chambers of Commerce draws interest. Five new members join from Bixbee and towns in Arizona New Mexico and Texas. The Southwest Welcomers Association gains tourist attention as badges to aid identification.
Bryan Hall pastors the Methodist Church with church school at 9 45 a m worship at 11 00 a m on Sunday the sermon titled Frail Children of Dust and choir rehearsal at 7 20 p m Wednesday service listed.
The Lions Club held a Tuesday noon gathering with President Taggarti. Lion Harry Roserstein performed a solo with Lion Sumner, followed by reports on highway repairs and local projects. Plans for Ladies' Night were set as members prepare events and initiate cubs.
Governor Miles and State Engineer McClure along with John Hradford State Police and Water Master Hugh Pace testified by deposition in Santa Fe this week for the federal suit in Tucson on November 6. The case questions contempt by Virden valley farmers for using Gila River water last season. New Mexico authority set the water determinations this year with defense by Mechem Hannett of Albuquerque L P McHalffey and Hearle Payne of burg. Representative Payne serves on the Legislative Committee of the State Bar Association.
