County agent L L Gleason urges cattle producers to stay calm amid lower prices and forced sales. He notes 20 percent more cattle on feed previously, droughts across regions depressing stock, and warns of slow buyers but expects eventual market improvement as demand rebounds. He advocates raising high quality, marketable cattle and promoting beef consumption.
State Engineer Herbert W. Yeo visited Hidalgo county last week for a preliminary survey of underground development waters funded by the state. He accompanied County page J Wells for talks with local men and planned a return in a few weeks to finalize details. He praised Lordsburg prosperity during the visit.
Stockholders and officers of the Anita Copper Company, led by General Manager T F E Henderson, visit mining properties in a tours of inspection. The distinguished party includes President W T Bill, H Henderson, Arthur Langhans, E L Henderson and wife, Mr and Mrs Fowler, M H Armstrong, Gustave Roeder and others. They dined at the Grill Tuesday night in Lordsburg.
The Bighorn Game Protective Association held its first annual banquet at the High School Auditorium with over sixty members and wives attending. Speeches by Fred Sherman of Deming and other local figures highlighted the event along with musical numbers by Harry Rosenstein and Haywire Dall. Officers C. Morrix, Earl Kerr, and Leslie Lee organized the gathering, planned as an annual event near hunting season.
The Lordsburg Mavericks host Silver City in a return football game Saturday afternoon. Lordsburg closed businesses for the event and a large crowd is expected after a scoreless tie at Silver City on Oct 6. The Mavericks beat Willcox 6 to 0 last Saturday and aim for an excellent exhibition.
J. H. Kicks, a Cloverdale rancher from Hidalgo County, and Miss Lorene H. Blocker of Kansas City Missouri, were married by Rev. John S. Rice in the city at 1 o'clock on Tuesday October 22.
The Rattan Saddlery Company returned from the Duncan fair with multiple premiums on fine saddles including first and second places and a top prize for a saddle in the big parade. Their exhibit drew a large, admiring crowd.
A telegram to the Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce secretary claims the governor designates Lordsburg as New Mexico's air capital. The message from October 22 mentions appointing a member to the Western States Aeronautics Association and promises mailing full information.
The secretary replies from Lordsburg New Mexico on October 24 1920 to Governor Dillon in Santa Fe confirming Willard Holt will accept the aeronautics post and do his best. The message ends with Holt's signature Willard B Holt.
The Luncheon Club met at Up-To-Date Cafe with eleven members present and N. J. Scott as chairman. A second Monday in November was set for an evening gathering inviting ladies and a private venue with a good program and social time. Committees will arrange the meeting and program. The next noon gathering is scheduled for Hidalgo Grill with Harry Rosenstein as chairman.
Lordsbury Lodge 30 A F and A M records the death of Brother I DuBsis a charter member. The resolutions note his role in organizing the lodge and his exemplary progressive citizenship. The minutes will copy the resolutions, notify the family, and publish in the Lordsburg Liberal.
Early Saturday a Whippet driven east by Alexander Muir and his son J Glenn Muir collided with a westbound Chrysler carrying Shelly Wiggins and sister Misa Nell Wiggins from Pasadena California on Lordsburg road. J Glenn Muir is dead and Alexander Muir Sr. is listed in critical condition with skull fracture. Shelly and Misa Nell Wiggins sustain minor injuries and testified at a late Saturday inquest before Judge Pennington.
The Liberal is sold by the current owner to Mr. Leslie Blackburn who will take charge on November 1 with the next issue. All bills from the previous management will be paid by Mr. Thomas and all accounts due to the Liberal by that date are payable to Mr. Thomas. Subscription money goes to the new management and payment can be made to Mr. Blackburn after he takes charge.
Dr and Mrs Paul Austin and Mr and Mrs Nat Gammon spent the weekend in Roswell visiting their son J T Austin who is attending New Mexico Military Institute.
Willard J. Holt secretary of the Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce left for El Paso to attend the West Texas Chambers of Commerce meeting this week. He will display ore specimens from Hidalgo County mines and promote Southwestern New Mexico industries.
Flood damaged San Marcial faces a bank crisis after the disappearance of cashier David A. Baca from Blate Bank. The bank has been closed since September floods and records recovered from the wreckage show a twenty to thirty thousand dollar shortage. State Bank Commissioner Tamme has taken the records to Santa Fe to determine the exact losses.
Sides CLTS from California reports finishing 450 tone of fine native hay on his ranch south of Animas. He told the Chamber of Commerce Tuesday about the harvest.
J B Casner of El Paso was a guest Monday of his sister Mrs Velix Kt Jortes.
Two Lordsburg residents recalled Thomas A. Edison at a Dearborn Michigan event Monday night. The tribute to Edison included memories from their youths in Flint and Wayne County, and noted Edison’s impact on industry and progress over fifty years.
Jease T. Smith superintendent of Lordsburg city schools will travel to Albuquerque to attend the New Mexico Education Association meeting. He serves as vice president of the association's legislative council and will meet committees reviewing by laws. Also attending are Miss Eicel Thomas and Mrs Olivia Wells.
David C. Cole, noted mining engineer from El Paso, visited Monday en route to Douglas to install spread ing beds for Vielpe Dodge smelter at a cost over 900000. He drew the plans for the project. Accompanying him was J. H. Puckett, longtime PD Corp. associate and now El Paso representative for Wheeling Steel Corp.
A cold wave grips the mountain region with snow and sleet spreading northward. Snow reported in parts of New Mexico as flakes fell Thursday morning across the area.
The Liberal failed to assemble a judging panel in time for this week’s essay publication. The committee is now named and the winners will be announced next week with the promised prizes.
The Lordsburg Liberal is sold to Leslie Mackburn who has managed Texas Louisiana Power Go properties locally. Mr Blackburn assumes control of the Liberal with prior experience in Magdalena Rikiy Oklahoma and Wink. Forrest Thomas signs off thanking readers and noting Blackburn will outline plans next week.
Nathan Jaffa chairman Geo L Uirick J W Aguilar members and John Joertia secretary visited Lordaburg Tuesday night staying at Hidalgo Hotel en route home to Santa Fe after a valuation comparison trip in Phoenix Arizona. The visit held no special significance beyond enjoying the city’s accommodations on their return to Santa Fe.
Bob Morris of El Pago acts as relief manager of the Mt State Telephone Co plant while Howald Laundry, the regular manager, takes a two week vacation. Laundry spends part of his leave visiting points of interest in Arizona.
