The American Association of Retired Persons announces its regular October meeting at Lordsburg Civic Center on Oct 23 at 7 p.m. Hidalgo County residents aged 55 and over are invited. refreshments will be served and candidates will answer questions from attendees.
Hidalgo County commissioners debated a bid from Southern New Mexico Professional Association linked to Eastwood Hospital to reopen Hidalgo General Hospital and clinic closed since June 5. The plan estimates 12 500 to 25 000 to restart operations with a 55 000 to 75 000 yearly budget, featuring two local doctors and a fulltime physician assistant and a 13 000 dollar monthly guarantee, amid concerns about county risk and physician billing controls.
Humphrey said figures surprised at the meeting after discussions with the association in El Paso. The hospital argued that the county would bear all the risk, a concern raised during the Monday gathering.
Maverick Marching Band of Lordsburg took second place at the Parade of Champions held at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. Judges praised music and marching execution and overall effect while spotlighting appearance, discipline, and enthusiasm.
Nancy Domenici will return to New Mexico for a three day campaign swing through Las Cruces Deming Silver City and Cotton City. Joining her are Mary Helen Skeen Nila Baer and Marge Logan with plans to campaign in the listed towns and counties.
Heidi France is welcomed as an advertising sales representative and general news reporter by the Lordsburg Liberal. Born in Denver, she has lived in western Colorado, worked with the Minatare Police Department, and served with the Gering Courier before moving to Lordsburg. She joins a staff active in community groups and will maintain regular hours at the Liberal Office.
New Mexico Highway Department released a 202 million dollar list of highway jobs for the next 12 months under new chief administrator Fred O Cheskey. The department warned not all projects can be funded and a bid schedule runs to October 1979. The list covers Hidalgo Grant Luna counties with projects on I 10 US 180 NM 9 and several street reconstructions and bridge replacements in Hobbs Lovington Deming Silver City Hurley and Bayard among others.
Lordsburg Mayor Alan A. Koff urged the city council to study raising cemetery plot prices from $100 and opening closing fees from $50, citing rising operating costs. He also proposed moving trust funds to earn higher interest and noted a council resignation. School schedules will shift for the NM-NEA Convention, with partial dismissals on Oct 25 26 and full day Oct 27.
