Democratic Caravan to Visit Lordsburg Civic Center

The State Democratic Caravan will stop in Lordsburg this Sunday October 15 at the Civic Center from 9 30 to 11 30 a m to meet locals. Hidalgo County Democratic Chair Mauro Rico says coffee and donuts will be served and volunteers are needed as hosts or hostesses. From Lordsburg the caravan will continue to Deming in the afternoon. Everyone is invited to attend.

Maverick Band to Compete in Parades at Las Cruces

Lordsburg High School Mavericks marching band joins 12 other southern New Mexico and El Paso groups in the first Parade of Champions at New Mexico State University Las Cruces on Saturday October 14 at 12 30 p m The event hosted by NMSU Pride band features 15 minute performances from entrants including Hatch Ruidoso Lordsburg Deming Mayfield Riverside El Paso Las Cruces Bel Air Coronado Eastwood Burges Bowie and other El Paso entries Judges evaluate marching general effect music and maneuvering Admission is 2 and tickets go on sale at 11 30 a m Phil Pressler directs the Lordsburg band and Tim Lautzenheiser notes the contest serves as recruitment and a chance for teens to visit Las Cruces

Hidalgo County Plans Road Meeting With State Officials

Hidalgo County commissioners plan a tentative 5 pm Oct 25 meeting in the Hidalgo County Courthouse with State Highway Department Planning Engineer Tony Gonzales on the proposed Playas Road. County Manager Allen Kerr described the session as a jam session to convey wishes and hear state offerings.

Glen Acres Streets Accepted Into County Road System

Glen Acres subdivision residents won a key victory as Ben Hogan Drive and Lee Trevino Drive were approved as county roads and became eligible for maintenance. The vote was unanimous aside from a dissenting motion to pave if funds and DA approval allow. County may pursue a cooperative paving agreement with the State Highway Department, needing gravel hauled from Rodeo.

Judge Estrada Attends Reno Management Institute

Jesus J. Estrada, juvenile probation officer for the Sixth Judicial Circuit in Lordsburg, completed the Juvenile Justice Management Institute in Reno on Oct. 16. The event drew 34 participants from 15 states and Washington, D.C., and covered program planning, case management, goal setting, organizational development, and team effectiveness.

Special Meet Set To Talk About Hospital

Hidalgo County commissioners schedule a special meeting Monday October 16 at 5 p.m. at the courthouse to hear proposals on reopening Hidalgo General Hospital. Administrator Don Humphrey of Sunshine Haven and a special consultant will present two management firms recommendations and he will also present his own. The county’s main hospital has been closed since June and a reopening by January 15 1979 is hoped.

Lordsburg Police Report September Activity Summary

Lordsburg City Police reported 283 calls in September including 234 public assists and 18 false alarms. There were 15 adult arrests and five Juvenile Probation referrals, three injury traffic accidents and three noninjury, 58 adult citations and 15 juvenile citations. Three units were in service.

Lordsburg Men Charged in Lehman’s Burglary

Two Lordsburg men Billy Turner age 25 and Jamie Deporto age 22 were charged with burglary of a structure and larceny over 100 dollars after a break in at Lehman's Department Store. A joint Lordsburg Police and Hidalgo County Sheriff’s investigation followed a Sunday patrol finding the crime and about 1000 dollars in clothing and footwear missing. Both men appeared before Lordsburg Magistrate Rosa Lina Salinas for arraignment.

Absentee Ballots Available At Hidalgo County Courthouse

Hidalgo County Clerk Pat Paulos offers absentee ballots for registered voters unable to vote on November 7. Mail applications must arrive by October 28. in person voting ends November 2 at 5 p.m. Ballots must be received by 7 p.m. on Election Day. Office at 300 S Shakespeare St. Eligible voters include ill or distant residents and those in jail awaiting felony status review. call 542-921 for ballots by mail.

Center CETA Help To Be Terminated

Lordsburg Youth Center likely to close by Oct. 31 if staffing costs cannot be funded. Don Kling, center representative, says CETA cuts threaten operation. County officials, while budget constrained, promise to explore options to keep the facility open as 2000 to 3000 people use it monthly.
