Registration drive readies Hidalgo County for draft

Eleanor Cochran and deputy Jan Fuller prepared for selective service registration set for October 16 in Hidalgo County. Precinct registrars appointed from 1 to 9 with Mrs. Cochran calling aid from Lordsburg. Each registrar aims to handle about 20 registrants from 7 to 9 am, with a single day to complete the nationwide process and the county Draft Board to determine classifications.

Cemetery Association Thanks Public for Sale Success

The Cemetery Association thanks the public for their participation in the rummage and food sale held last Saturday. They acknowledge Mr. Smith for the use of space and all others who helped. The sale raised 68 dollars from the rummage and additional funds from the food portion.

Tom Mix Visits Lordsburg for Fair Opening Parade

Movie star and circus owner Tom Mix arrived in Lordsburg the day before the fair opening and stayed to greet admirers. He drove his Cord car bearing his name and mingled with the crowd during the opening day parade, marking his longest visit to the town.

Surprise Birthday Party for Mrs. Vernon Brock at Pontius Home

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pontius of El Paso hosted a surprise party for Mrs. Vernon Brock last Wednesday. About 30 guests attended and dinner was served from a mobile boat in the Pontius backyard. A two tier cake with the inscription Happy Birthday Leon topped the celebration. Mrs. Claude Olney of Lordsburg attended from El Paso. Mr. and Mrs. R. B. B. Ownby returned from a two week Texas trip.

Perey Brown earns honor in a detective magazine for a gripping Western tale about the Safford Arizona murder. Sheriff Emert T. Kempton led a force from the Pacific Coast to New Orleans with FBI help to arrest the hitchhiker Thomas Lawshe, an escaped inmate from the Arizona peniten tiary, and the killer was sent to Florence prison for 60 years.

Opening Day At Southwestern New Mexico Live Stock Show A Success

The opening day of the Southwestern New Mexico Live stock Show and Fair drew strong crowds despite a brief shower. Over 100 horses entered the Lordsburg races with entrants expected from Deming next week. Exhibits include farm products and livestock from Virden Animaa Rodeo Valley View. American Legion Auxiliary Holds Regular Meeting

The American Legion Auxiliary met on Wednesday October 3 at the home of Mrs Claude Sanders with Mrs Anderson assisting. After the regular business a social hour and refreshments followed. Claytons Entertain Guests at Ranch Dinner

Lordsburg Wins 1941 District Teachers Meet Invitation

The Southwestern New Mexico Educational Association, with about 660 teachers across Hidalgo Grant Lena Dona Ana Sierra and Otero Counties, met in Silver City October 4 and 6 1940. Lordsburg welcomed hosting the 1941 meeting with a cordial invitation aimed to attract 400 to 500 teachers.

Proper Court Procedure Saves Taxpayer Money

Judge George W. Hay told Liberal representatives that Hidalgo Grant and Luna counties in the Sixth District will run on a pretrial 60 percent budget plan. County clerks will handle tasks to avoid five to six thousand dollars yearly in special court clerks fees, saving taxpayers about six thousand dollars annually. In Luna County no jurors this year. in Hidalgo three court days. in Grant three or four jury days. Court efficiency keeps trial pace rapid and funds from being exhausted, easing tax burdens.

Oklahoma Grimes and party visit Tanner Mining area

I. J. Grimes president of Tanner Mining, with Mrs. Grimes and W. H. Hardy, arrived from Oklahoma City for a noon visit. The Grimes ship used pilot Carl Winstead, while Hardy Young recently joined a major oil firm. They toured Leadjannven Mine and Carlabad, praised Superintendent E. S. Bowman, and sent the Hardys toward Tucson for a brief air tour before Bill Hardy’s bus ride back.
