District engineers report flood damage statewide total around eight million dollars and call for public support to accelerate construction.
Clayton president of the Mexico Cattle Growers Association urges ranchers tourists and residents to prevent grass and weed fires amid raging western fires. State Game Protective Association Highway Department State Police Game Department Tourism Bureau Rail and Soil Conservation Service and Forest Service coordinate to educate and stop fires from starting or spreading.
Churches notes show services at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. led by Curtis Dickinson with songs by Hal H. Martin. Evening evangelistic meetings at 7:30 p.m. feature Dickinson and Hal H. Martin with topics on faith and eternity. Weekly services run nightly except Saturday with special May messages.

Miss Mary Cureton and Vernon Thompson will wed next Sunday morning at 8:50 at the Cureton home before family and a few close friends. The couple plan to depart for the west on the noon train.
A group from Lordsburg Woman Club traveled to Douglas for a district meeting of the Womans Club. Attendees enjoyed a turkey luncheon at the Tiptop Club with over 200 guests. Dr. Lucinda Templin of El Paso spoke, continuing a September talk noted as outstanding.
The Red Cross announces a new First Aid class starting this month and invites those interested to contact Mrs R B Pruggle or Mrs E M Brickley. Enrollment will determine when lessons begin and a Home Nursing class is also proposed. Volunteers meet Mondays to cut garments for distribution with help from several named members.

An 18 month old, Robert Wayne Iola, son of Mr and Mrs W D Iola, was struck and killed by a Southern Pacific train near the Gary section house. A coroner's jury ruled accidental death as the child wandered through an open yard gate onto the tracks. Community sympathy and church members attended a Zone meeting in Hatch.
Lordsburg Mavericks travel to Hurley for a high anticipated game as Hurley recently routed Silver City 20 to 0 and fell to Hot Springs by a slim margin. The league contest features Hurley’s aerial attack led by Canada and Lordsburg’s strong ground game with timely passes. A large crowd is expected with both teams evenly matched and excitement building.
Lordsburg hosts a formal tea for Southwestern Teachers Association delegates. Mrs. Mary Lee Fairly led arrangements with the Womans Club hospitality committee decorating the club house and serving refreshments. An orchestra provided music and the event featured roses, silver centerpieces and a God Bless America performance.
Lions Club members met Tuesday with Lion Joe Emanuel presiding. Reports covered a district social in Lordsburg with Deming Silver City Bayard and Lordsburg clubs, a Lordsburg Hurley football game, highway dips removal Las Cruces to Arizona line, and the Southwestern New Mexico Educational Association meeting. H P Watkins touted tourist traffic value. Lordsburg is a member of the Associated Southwestern Chambers of Commerce.
The mayor of Lordsburg New Mexico proclaims October 27 Navy Day in line with federal and state proclamations. The notice notes Roosevelt’s naval legacy and the 1775 founding of the American Navy. It urges residents to observe the day amid current international tensions in 1941.

Elmer Plumley, 21, an escaped Texas convict, charged under the National Motor Vehicle Theft Act, appeared with Manuel A. Sanchez Jr and F. B. L. before U S Commissioner Holt. Plea of guilty entered and he was remanded to the U S Grand Jury under $2,000 bond, which was not furnished.
A miners meeting is set at two oclock today in Silver City at the Murray Hotel. Governor Miles appoints John M. Kelly state geologist to chair the New Mexico agency on mining priorities as the New Mexico Miners and Prospectors Association calls all local mine operators to attend for important discussions.
Mrs. Nicholas Diaz 84 widow of the late Nicholas Diaz died Saturday. Funeral was held Sunday from the Catholic church with Rev Daniel Thistle officiating. A Lordsburg resident since the early 1900s, she leaves sons Pasqual William Inez and Nicholas Diaz a daughter Mrs Ramona Martinez and many grandchildren.
J B White of the International Boundary Commission in El Paso met with the Chamber of Commerce to discuss erecting a wire fence along the 50 mile Hidalgo County border with Mexico. The commission has funds for about 32 miles of barbed wire on steel posts, and farmer support or higher cost woven wire could reduce buildable miles. Lawson seeks owner justification for more expensive fencing and about 26 000 dollars is available. Clayton of the stockmen’s association may draft a letter with views. White also aimed to meet Tom Clayton in Lordsburg, but he was away at Cloverdale.
Mrs Katherine Edwards Disaster Relief Chairman Western Area confers with local Red Cross leaders and now oversees Red Cross activities in the Duncan Virden Red Rock and Cliff district aiding flood victims.
The Browns extend heartfelt thanks to neighbors and friends for aid after their home was washed away by the flood and for the many kindnesses shown during this difficult time.
On Sunday October 12 the local Methodist church holds its last conference year services. Rev. Joe Emanuel will preach his final sermon before attending the New Mexico annual conference in Odessa Texas. A report will be given for the church.
Bailey Smith, 65, longtime court house custodian, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Hatfield in Lordsburg. He had complained of illness and was treated by Dr. Johnson and Dr. E C DeMons but died. Survived by widow, three sons Karl Lee in Lordsburg and Andy in Wilmington California, two daughters Irene Kimball in Apache and Herbert Strange in Animas, five grandchildren. Funeral arrangements pending.
Fifteen directors met at the courthouse with President George Cureton to plan two parades on the 25 and 26 and a Feeder Sale on the 27 led by auctioneer Col Karl Gartin. Saddle shows, judging by Prof. J A Knox and George Ellia, plus sale of 1600 calves and yearlings, highlight the preparations for a three day fair with racing, roping, and livestock exhibitions.
Mina Anna Bell Denton of Anthony and Harold Lines of Virden wed at Riteh Hall Silver City in a ceremony led by Bishop Loman Swapp. The couple will reside on campus while continuing studies.

Hidalgo county Mohair growers earned a total of 85,226.61 dollars from 154,452 pounds of Mohair sold in 1940. Forte Dappe Sawyer Co of Boston bought spring pool hair for 4c and kid hair at 68e, while Wm. Pebiger Co of Boston bought fall pool hair at 5c and 78e for kid hair. Be Wood of Lordsburg represented the buyers. Growers aim to improve herds to raise Mohair per goat and secure higher prices.
