Stories and Pictures Crowded Out This Week

Members who joined since last week include Pinto Cafe Myers Motel F. W. Bank Bob Flickinger C. C. Martin Wesley Freeburg and Bob Harwood. Those not yet joined are invited to send membership to George P. Jeffus. The week’s meeting shows ongoing active efforts.

Young Republicans Organized Here

Last Thursday September 30 a meeting called by Opal Salaiz Hidalgo County Republican Vice Chairman organized the young Republicans. Guest speakers included Lyman Raef Senior Republican State chairman and others. Officers elected Alfred Altuna chairman Sally Gutierrez co chairwoman Ramon Hernandez Joe Noce Mary Louise Alvarez secretary Titina Fierro treasurer.

Lions Hold Interesting Meeting at Noon Luncheon

The Lordsburg Lions Club met for a regular Noon luncheon. District Governor Bert Exter of Albuquerque planned to attend on October 19. Wesley Freeburg invited state education inspectors to assess curriculums and equipment in schools, with a summary of early findings. The club discussed sponsoring a Seeing Eye Dog for Bert Smith and approved by the board.

City Council weighs water and sewer expansion plan

A special meeting discussed an engineer’s report on providing running water citywide at an estimated 450 009 dollars. It includes a 300 000 gallon water tank and new sewer mains. The council will study the proposal further.

Episcopal Guild Food Sale At Hollen Hotel

The ladies of St. Pauls Episcopal Guild plan a Saturday morning sale in the Hollen Hotel lobby starting at 10 o clock. Baked ham beans gal ads cakes pies and home canned fruit will be offered. A White Elephant Sale promises an added attraction and shoppers are urged to attend and buy a relative or in law a Christmas gift.

Initiation at Western Star Temple No. 11 Reports from Magdalena

At the last regular meeting of Western Star Temple No. 11 an initiation was held with Mrs. Barbara Reeves as candidate. The degree staff impressed with its colorful drama. Delegates reported on the Grand Temple held in Magdalena on Sept. 20 and 21. Western Star Temple was represented by Mesdames Maude Green Bethel Fuller Ruth Cohen Odie Lee Haltom Mertice Brooks and Meryl Pierce.

Eighth grade F H A chapter sale at high school

The eighth grade F H A chapter will sell candy cake and cookies in the high school hallway from 8:30 to 9:00 a m and again at noon on Friday October 8 1948 Students are reminded to bring plenty of nickels for purchases.

Local Hospital Now Has Four Nurses

Hidalgo County hospital once Lordsburg hospital now staffs four full time nurses. Mrs. Richard Rice replaced Mrs. Lola Beavers when the county assumed control. Maud McDonald has served since March and will stay under the new setup. Esther Cochran began night duties September 1 after training at Harper Hospital Detroit. Leanne Richins, a local graduate from Albuquerque hospital, joined staff September 16.

Library Week Proclaimed in New Mexico by Governor Mabry

Governor Mabry designated Oct 10 to 16 as Library Week in New Mexico per Evlyn Shuler of the New Mexico Library Association. Lordsburg Hidalgo library reports over five thousand volumes with more than one hundred on local Southwest topics. Librarian Miss Mathilde Johnson and the board members promote services, including lending to Animas and Virden areas.
