Rural groups gather for 4-H demonstrations and fashion talks reading about Leghorn flocks, dress styles, sewing projects, and school lunches. Members attend, exchange ideas on linoleum care, home storage, and use of pressure cookers while plans for future meetings unfold.
A chamber of commerce board met at city hall on Tuesday with strong attendance. City officials including the city clerk and Mayor Brown participated, with Senator Lee Brown Atwood among the notable advisers. The discussion focused on city and county interests, tourism development, and plans to boost the area as a major stopping point on southern highways, noting over half a million tourists visit Lordsburg annually.

Mr and Mrs C B Austin entertained at an elegant dinner Monday evening hosted by the county health nurse Miss Eleanor O'Meara and nurses Miss Lola Beavers Miss Maye Jones and Mrs Keithley. A theatre party followed the dinner.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hoard and Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Bailey are on an extended motor trip through Texas Arkansas and Oklahoma. They plan to visit the Dallas Greater Texas and Pan American Exposition and also Muskogee Oklahoma and Rogers Arkansas.
The Virden 4-H group discusses goats mohair and kitchen color schemes with neutral walls and red and black notes. Mrs McCant reads minutes and records farm work while Mrs DeVillis plans spring planting near a water well. The 4 H Achievement Day is set for October 23 and members begin keeping yearly records starting November 1.
The department lists July public assistance totals from federal and state funds amounting to 80774.20 with breakdowns for old age assistance 35989.43 aid to dependent children 24817.45 needy blind 2471.38 direct relief 15496.76 child welfare 1819.60 and crippled children 179. Hidalgo County shows 43 old age cases averaging 14.74 and 931.95 for 52 aid to dependent children cases averaging 8.25 per child with state averages noted. Also 5 tubercular cases under Socorro Infirmary care and CCC enrollment figures for New Mexico juniors in camps across multiple states with Hidalgo County CCC enrollment planned for October 11 and ten juniors to be selected.
Lions Club reports show a Tuesday luncheon attendance with President Augustine and visiting guest Kelvinator Anderson of Albuquerque, a salesman for that refrigerator brand. Committees update on Lions picnic Thursday, football game Friday, and stock show Saturday. A motion passed to pay for phone use at the new old peoples home opposite the Methodist church.
W E Garber of the Good Year test fleet based at Litchfield Park Arizona has driven around the world eight times in auto travel. His wife Mrs Garber reportedly holds a record of over a million miles of accident free driving. Garber to be joined soon by Mr Gerber at the testing base as Good Year confirms a permanent tire testing base at Litchfield Park.
Very Superior Corn from Red Rock presented to the Chamber of Commerce on Friday. Two ears stood out: the white Dent variety with even large kernels and a dent cane with kernels 5 to 8 inches wide. The display demonstrates what can be grown in this region.
Mr and Mrs Howard Wittig of El Paso return from Los Angeles praising New Mexico and West Texas as superior. They tell their aunt Mrs H L Scofield of their views, and Dorothy McCabe now near Hollywood also favors New Mexico climate with Joan earning the nickname Native Daughter.
Mrs S M Chase hosted the N and T Club on Tuesday with several members knitting and planning future projects. The next meeting will be at the ranch home of Mrs Charles Puller.

Regular Hidalgo County Advisory Committee met at 4 p m in the Public Welfare office. Members discussed new crippled children service applications, adolescent issues in Lordsburg, and entertainment for youths. The group noted Virden children’s activities reduce problems and reported a $6500 matching donation plan for tonsil removal. the old people’s home needs furnishings. Lions Club to install a telephone. next meeting November 1 at 3 p m.
Mrs Ada Woodbury a leading New Mexico court reporter will make her last official visit as she resigns to devote time to social affairs and home duties Her replacement faces a large upcoming assignment with high expectations due to Woodburys noted efficiency and courteous charm.
Governor Clyde Tingley appoints L. P. McHalffey as New Mexico committeeman for the Lower Colorado Basin. He and state engineer Thomas J. McClure will attend an October 15 meeting in Phoenix focusing on Southwestern New Mexico duties.
Last Sunday evening a debate titled Resolved that a malicious gossip can do more harm in a community than a well to do moderate drinker was won by the negative. Judges were E. J. Wood B. B. Ownby and John Dorrance. Thirty eight youths attended from Intermediate and Senior groups with two joining the Senior society. Carol Bonar chairs Prayer Meeting committee. October plans underway. Next Sunday features an Inasmuch program from Matthew 25 and a monthly consecration service. Church of Christ 6 30 sharp. all ages welcome reverent worship expected.
Mrs. O. 8. Warren, founder of Silver City business, traveled Monday to meet her daughter Mrs. G. H. Hester of Louisville. She praises her 11 year old great granddaughter Miss Joan Bartlett who attends Wellesley Finishing School. Warren notes she has visited Lordsburg since 1883 and the city’s ten year growth.
The regular meeting met in the church undercroft on Friday October 1 with Mrs EF J Malone and Mrs RR B Rundgren and Mrs Glen Moses as hostesses. Mrs Charles Puller presided and the nominating committee was named. Election of officers set for November 5. Mrs R A Crider led the program Women in Missions. Attendees included Mrs W Trimble Mrs G W Hanner Mrs W W Beatt Mrs J Cloyd Miller Robert Pierce W C Mearns J H Baxter R A Crider George Ewan Bryan Hall A L Green R T Bonar Miss Ima Patrly and the hostesses. Lovely refreshments were served.
A La Vets Colorado wire reports the serious illness of LeRoy Springer father of Mia W FE Baxter and Mrs. Wallace Brewer. The women left for Deming to join their brother from Silver City and drive to their father’s home. Lordsburg residents recall him warmly from a recent visit.
Dr. R. F. Vinson lectures at the Methodist church each Sunday at ten o'clock. He presents facts from original Greek and Hebrew manuscripts using a blackboard to illustrate. The series aims to give Lordsburg residents a strong, factual understanding of Biblical material.
The annual livestock show in Lordsburg Hidalgo county drew goat and cattle men from Midalgo county and beyond on Saturday October 2. Prizes included grand champion doe George and Cureton bred steer wins. 4-H beef steers from Midalgo showcased for El Paso show. Judges Neale and Mil Davis led cattle and goats judging with merchants awarding prizes.
Major W. F Carroll and Mrs Carroll visited the local airport to inspect Milver City and Deming landing fields. The Carrolls previously lived in this county on the Honney property managed by J. B. Poster and J. P. Porteus. Their daughter Miss Feuth, a noted writer, was once a baby here and was kissed by General Pershing during Washington visits.
The Lions Lionesses and Lordsburg faculty drove to Milver City highway for a weiner ball. Wieners boiled in a kettle with committee supplied sides, rain briefly fell but cleared. Lions and guests played childhood games with no accidents and reported a glorious time.
The Methodist Church School finished a successful year with Sunday October 3 designated as promotion day. Beginner and Primary members presented several delightful numbers led by Betty Ray Elma. After promotion certificates were given, all children adjourned to their classes.
In Cartale Grant county once a quiet ghost town 12 miles northeast of Dun can the Lucky Pluorepar mine opens for shipment of high grade ore. Col Be M Lucky discovered the Ouorapar veins in 1917 with No 1 vein 5 feet wide and No 2 vein 7 feet wide. Production aims at 50 tons daily and a mill is planned at Duncan. Eighty two tons shipped to Los Angeles this year signals renewed mining activity. ex President Herbert Hoover once worked here as a mining engineer.
Bible School runs from 10 to 11 a m at the Church of Christ with Lord's Supper and preaching at 11 a m Junior and Senior Endeavor meet at 6 30 p m followed by preaching at 7 30 p m Minister J J SBeimberry leads the services.
