The Hidalgo County 4-H program reports strong activity and club growth. Leaders note increased enrollment, judging by new officers including Dosapoine Yarbrough as president and Tillian Ballard as secretary, with projects in home furnishings clothing and canning.
About 125 attended the New Mexico Association of Insurance Agents annual convention in Albuquerque. Postello Cooper of Deming called the meeting to order. J. K. Boyce and H. C. Stoll spoke on rating addresses. Harold E. Scofield of Lordsboro was elected to the Constitution and By-Laws committee.
A local church invites all ages to Bible study at 10 a m with qualified teachers and a 6:30 pm training class. Communion and preaching at 11 am and 7:40 pm Sunday. Prayer meeting Wednesday 7:30 pm. Everyone welcome to attend and worship God according to the Bible.
Robert Hollinshead, manager of the Concert Program, Hollywoid, has sent the official program to Mrs. C. B. Austin and provided a list of entertainments. The entries include Rose Paidar on November 9, Charles Gallagher on January 22, Annette Stahly on February 8, Roy Cooper on March 21, Gladys Pete, a Travelogue with Gloria Hicklett and Elora Sornsen with Harold Gelman on April 17.
The Sunday Night Supper Club hosted a weiner roast on Edgar Cureton road Sunday. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. J. T. McNutt, Mr. and Mrs. Allan Bowman, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pierce, Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Chase, Mr. and Mrs. Noble Kirkpatrick, Dr. and Mrs. James Baxter, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Mayfield, Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Bason, and Mr. and Mrs. Dick Lewis.
The community Presbyterian church of Valley View observes World Wide Communion Service on Sunday October Today. Members and friends are urged to attend with a Session and Board of Trustees meeting during the day. Opportunity to join by letter or profession of faith with Rev. Robert R. Marquis serving as minister.
Local leaders met Monday night to plan a bigger second district fair. State officials and businessmen praised the event, highlighting Hereford cattle from White Mountain ranch, notable board additions from New Mexico and Arizona, and planned WPA labor for grounds improvements to ensure a successful, expanded fair and race meet next year.
Saturday night a daughter was born to Mrs. Mary Josephine De Moes Sjostrom at DeMoen Hospital. Mother and baby Susan Elizabeth Sjostrom are doing nicely. Elmer Sjostrom continues his law studies at Stanford University with Edwin DeMosse joining at term start.
The Lordsburg 4 H orchestra led by Mrs. T B Williams provided music for the Luna County flower show in Deming at the Methodist church. Attending were Mrs. A V Broun Mrs A L Cox and Home Demonstration Agent Mrs Olive B Cruse.
The 1940 Range Conservation program approved by Secretary Wallace promotes permanent cover on range land with a range building allowance earned by carrying out range practices. It may be combined with the Agricultural Conservation Program in states upon State AAA recommendations and A A A approval. The plan emphasizes deferred grazing, with payments for keeping livestock off land until native forage matures. The maximum range building allowance is limited to 7 percent of area eligible for deferred grazing and practices. Payment basis for contour listing furrowing or subcoiling changes to 244 cents per linear foot to reflect practice cost.
The Thuraday Urndee Club met at Mrs. J. T. McNutt home with members including Mrs. Hubert Poindexter and Mrs. Sherwood Culberson. They voted to move future gatherings from Thursdays to Tuesdays at that location.
At a cattle grading demonstration in Torrance County, rancher Fred Leck reported mineral supplements kept his cows free of creeps after prior cases on salt graves. He contrasted his herd with a neighbor who did not feed minerals, noting reduced salt intake and improved cattle condition during the trial.

Miss Nan Glass celebrated her sixth birthday on Tuesday with a cake by Mrs. Robert Poindexter. Guests received rubber ball favors and small candy bags while ice cream and sherbet were served. Attendees included Allan Johnson Ara belle Malcolm Hill Darlene Moses Jerry Walker Noble Kirke Patrick Jackie Lonnie Helen Ann Hall and Jack Cochran.
Revival services will continue through Sunday night with an emphasis on a genuine revival. Sunday School meets at 10 a.m. followed by preaching at 11 a.m. The Young People's Union gathers at 6:30 p.m. with preaching at 7:30 p.m. A baptismal service is scheduled for Sunday night at the close of the service.
The Tuesday Bridge Club met at the home of Mrs. Robert Poin dexter with members L. B. Robinson, Donald Johnson, Freeman McWhorter, J. T. McNutt and Forrest Sanders. Guests for the afternoon were Mrs. E J Short and Mrs. Carlos Walker.
The Intermediate class held a weiner roast on the Silver City road Wednesday. Four carloads of class members joined a picnic led by Mrs. Claude Olney, Mrs. Nat Gammon, Mrs. F. H. Daniels and Rev. Hall.
The Juniors of the American Legion Auxiliary will meet at Mrs. Moselle Messecar's home on Wednesday October 11 from 5 to 7 PM. A pot luck supper precedes the business meeting. Members are urged to attend as many have moved away or are studying elsewhere and membership is small.
Miss Marlene Pierce celebrated her eighth birthday on Saturday September 20 with a weiner roast. Invited guests included Joan Ella Mary Lou Brown Malcolm Anna Belle and W P Hill Allan Johnson Paul Corbell Jackie Lonnie Helen Ann Hall Mickie Watham Laura Payne Laura Lee Elmore Jackie Cochran Darlene Moses Lilly Garrett Marlene Roland and Mary Ann Holmes.
The Methodist Missionary Society will hold its regular meeting on Friday October 6 at the home of Mrs Forrest Sanders. Mrs Glenn Moses will present the play she plans to perform at the upcoming zone meeting in Hot Springs at the end of October.
Agent F H Daniele of the Southern Pacific Company reports Lordsburg received 2.54 inches of rain in September, up from 0.58 inches the previous year. The month’s high reached 9 percent above zero and the low stood at 48 degrees.
J. G. Lindley and John Lawton of the Albuquerque office with C. W. Zumwalt rangeman and John McMillan of Silver City, joined by pilot William Cutler, flew to Lordsburg Wednesday evening for a tour of inspection.
Mr and Mrs Robert Poindexter were driven to Silver City on Friday evening according to local report.
Attorney and Mrs. Amos W. Pollard of Deming visited Lordsburg on Wednesday with Mr. Pollard appearing for official business.
Mrs. L. K. Naegle appointed statewide supervisor for the Historical Records Survey. She assigns Dwayne Herbert of Clenwood and John Vicor of Bilver City to search Hidalgo county records and ship non current files to the New Mexico Historical Society.
The Lordabure Lions hosted the Lordetary school faculty and spouses for a Tuesday evening picnic on the Lordaborge Beltway. A large Wiener roast, soft drinks, and outdoor games entertained attendees as Lions President Thomas Theewart and Lions Donald Dehreen and John Wall organized the event. the committee called it a successful gathering.
State Highway Department reports seven day traffic checks at Lordsburg show 11 percent of vehicles are non residents. The tally includes 5 464 presenters 21 trucks and buses with 759 passengers 604 HR trailers with passengers and 2 212 total motor vehicles carrying 6 016 passengers. Tourists arrived from all states plus Alaska Canada Canal Zone China Cuba Hawaii Mexico Panama Philippines and the Virgin Islands.
Bureau of Public Roads may approve a shortened Lordsburg to Silver City route on State Highway 180. G Dwyre has discussed the plan with ranchmen whose land the new road will cross and expects to begin work soon. The change would cut six to seven miles and remove Tyrone hill.
The Wednesday Sewing Club met at Robert Pierce's home with members W C Mearns P M Chase Thomas Tarrart Glenn Moses Robert Poindexter Noble Kirkpatrick Ima Fairly and others. They decided to move meetings from Wednesday to Thursday and served nut bread sandwiches peas cottage cheese salad olives coffee and tea. Maurice Conner of Silver City and his wife visited Donald and Mrs Johnson last weekend.
During a regular meeting of the Mountain View Cemetery Association board, trustees recorded a formal resolution of regret and appreciation for Mrs. W N Ownby who passed away July 29. The note praises her health and strength, long service, and efforts toward beautification and perpetuity of the cemetery. Vernon Fuller, secretary, and Vera G. Broun, president, are cited.
The Lordsburg Hidalgo Library Board held its regular meeting on Monday with vice president Mrs. J. C. Conner presiding. Treasurer resignation by Mrs. Thomas R. Taggart announced. Mrs. Felix Ganelled elected treasurer by superintendents. Librarian report given by Mrs. Marguerite Codding. Several officers re elected. donations of books and magazines noted from multiple donors. Attending members included Mrs. J. Conner, Pat Ewing, Felix Gauthier, Leo Bates, N. C. Tenney, W. H. Walters, Ray Edington, R. L. Jarvis, Marguerite Codding.
The Wednesday Bridge Club gathered at the home of Mrs. and Mrs. Short. Members present included Mesdames S. F. Allen, Co. B. Austin, EF Baovens, Jack Clark, W.W. Downey, and Nat Gammon with guest Mrs. Robert Prugle afternoon gathering.
The N and T Sewing Club gathered Tuesday at Mrs Charles Fuller’s ranch home. Members present included Mesdames Trimmie Scofield Jones Conner and Clark with guests Mesdames Ewan Augustine McLeay and Fisher. Refreshments of nut real sandwiches salad cake tea and coffee were served. Mrs Amy Pence has gone with her daughter and son in law Mr and Mrs Dell Winters to visit in Cloudcroft. Mr and Mrs Winters spent last weekend visiting in Lordsburg.
