Council names Sherri Arredondo and Randy Cooper to head a new effort to recover back bills. Mayor Hill says the council will stay largely uninvolved while the team runs the project with full authority. Arredondo and Cooper offer to negotiate payment plans with interested debtors.
Jose C. Esquivel 69 died September 23 at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City. Born March 19, 1916 in El Paso, he lived in Lordsburg all his life. He worked at Up To Date Grocery and served in the U.S. Army 1942 46. Survived by wife Victoria, daughter Cecelia Bejarano, two brothers, two sisters, and three grandchildren. Rosary September 25 and Funeral Mass September 26 at St. Joseph's. Burial Shakespeare Cemetery. Pallbearers named.
Richard Johnson president of the Hooker Dam association will speak at the Knights of Pythias Hall on Thursday October 3 at 7 00 PM. He supports the Southwest Action Committee led by Jimmy McCants and urges all interested in Hooker Dam or Conner Dam impacts on Lordsburg recreation and economy to attend free of charge. Johnson has long served as Hooker Dam member and as a Silver City Councilman and Grant County Commissioner.
The Knights of Columbus will distribute commodities on Friday October 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at St. Joseph's Church. Dr Maynard’s office will be closed Friday October 4 1985.

Contreras aged 80 died September 30 at Gila Regional Hospital Silver City born May 15 1905 in St. Louis New Mexico lived in Lordsburg all her life member of St Joseph Catholic Church survived by husband Manuel six sons and five daughters including Alfonso DeLao Louis DeLao Manuel Contreras Jr and Raymond Botello and Miralda Nevaro Lupe Jaquez Augustina Botello Dolores Marquez Adelia Powell also one brother-in-law James Vasquez 42 grandchildren 73 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren Funeral services set with mass October 3 at 9 00 a m at St Joseph Catholic Church with pallbearers and honorary pallbearers named plus a Hidalgo Health Office representative attending a women’s conference in Albuquerque.
State Police Officer Mike French led a response after a small chemical spill reported Tuesday at the former Pearl's Jewelry building. The incident involved Western Bank, Santa Fe emergency staff, New Mexico State University pesticide experts, and a Las Cruces adviser, with cleanup using clay cat litter and 55 gallon drums disposed at Lordsburg landfill.
Seniors may receive flu shots at the Citizens Center located at 317 East Fourth Street in Lordsburg Hidalgo. The event starts at 9 00 A M and lasts until 12 00 noon on Wednesday October 16. A service fee of 3 00 dollars is charged.
The Sheriff's Department reported the apprehension of an escaped Oklahoma convict last Tuesday September 24. Deputy David Waites spotted a suspicious vehicle with three people across from the Holiday Motel and called for backup from Captain John McDonald. One man fled toward freight trains. the vehicle was stolen in Texas. Interrogation at the sheriff’s department identified one of the two men.
A Gordita sale is planned for Saturday in the cafetorium while a junior rodeo takes place Sunday at the fairgrounds. The events are hosted by local volunteers and open to families and the community. Proceeds from the gordita sale will support youth programs.
