New Mexico girls from Lordsburg and nearby towns joined 104 members at the district Future Homemakers of America meeting in Reserve on September 27 1947. Officers were elected led by Patsy Smith with Miss Gillespie present for training and installation.
The Taxpayers' association of New Mexico presents Hidalgo county budgets for the year ending June 30, 1948, comparing with 1946-47. It lists total budgets by fund, with property tax amounts shown and the shortfall met by balances and other estimated receipts from income, sales, licenses, and departmental fees.
The Business and Professional Women's club will meet on Thursday October 9 at Hotel Hidalgo for a 7 00 pm dinner. Reservations are due by Monday evening. Call Mrs Foster at 84 or Mrs Poindexter at 4 to reserve. October meetings are led by finance committee chair Lucille Foster with members Fannie Poindexter Della Cureton Stella Vollmar Louise McDaniels and Dorothy Kimbley.
Mrs F N Davidson a sixth grade teacher sustained a painful foot injury after stepping on a nail this week and could not teach for several days.
Duncan and Lordsburg battled to a 13 to 13 tie Friday night. Lordsburg opened with a first quarter drive from their 25 aided by a Hernandez to Camacho pass and a Taylor carry. Duncan replied in the second quarter with Bramley returning a pair of interceptions 75 yards for a score and a late touchdown on short passes before time expired.
Lordsburg travels to Morenci for a Friday night varsity clash. Fans urged to pack the stands and root for the team in this local rivalry showdown.
A Lordsburg columnist calls for more tourist parking on R. R. Avenue arguing visitors bring revenue to the town. Cars owned by locals clog main streets, driving tourists to nearby towns, leading to a pledge to park on back streets for over ten minutes to free space. He suggests leasing city lots near the post office and bank to create convenient parking.
Patsy Smith, 15, a Lordsburg high school junior, was elected president of the F H A district after already serving as local chapter president. The district includes Anthony Hatch Reserve Hot Deming Las Cruces and Lordsburg. She has completed two years in home economics and is now taking home economics H. She also served as district secretary at the December district meeting in Deming and attended the state convention.
Local Lions club members are asked to keep the evening of October 20 open for a ladies night program. The weekly meeting will be held that evening and members should bring their wives or a lady friend. A box supper is planned and a good program is promised.
The Lordsburg Future Homemakers of America held a Monday meeting on September 29 1947 to elect new officers including Vice President Faye Nally Secretary Treasurer Ruth Whisnant Parliamentarian Barbara Martinez and others. Advisor is Mrs Freeburg. The group promotes home economics classes in the F H A organization.
The Lordsburg P T A will meet October 16 for a meeting and election of officers. The organization seeks larger membership and aims to aid teachers, students and schools by promoting child welfare and closer home school cooperation.
Ralph Craig, a 19 7 graduate of S. H. S., scored the only touchdown that beat Colorado A. and M. at last Saturday night. He won a suit of clothes from a Silver City merchant and earned a scholarship from STC covering a year’s insurance and room and board.
