National Guard to Leave for North Carolina Amid City Staffing Gaps

In a little more than a week the local National Guard unit and the rest of the second battalion depart to join regular army units in North Carolina. Key municipal workers including the Liberal staff and police patrolmen will be away for about three weeks. The advance party leaves from Biggs Air Force Base on October 7 under Captain Jesus Estrada with Lt. Nieves Frausto and other sergeants, to prepare for equipment and arrival of the battery.

Mass Schedule Change for First Friday

Notice to Catholics announces Friday October 2 as the first Friday of the month with Mass at 5 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. Confessions will be heard from 4 p.m. until the start of Mass.

Voting Registration Deadline October 5

Hidalgo County notices inform residents not registered to vote must complete registration by 5 p.m. Monday, October 5, to be eligible for the November 3 general election. Registration requires one year in the state and 90 days in Hidalgo County.

Animas High Students Present Program To Lions Club

Three Animas High School students spoke at the Lions Club meeting in El Charro. H R Overholt hosted as program chairman and introduced Wendy Richins Roseanne Mortensen and Ralph Richards. Richards described the school curriculum FFA activity and its annual rodeo and county representation at the State Fair. The students sang two songs with Miss Richins on piano. Overholt noted long bus routes for district students and discussed how removing the Southern Pacific south line would affect school funds from property taxes.

Miss Gomez Crowned Queen of Fiesta at St Joseph Parish

Liz Gomez daughter of Mr and Mrs Lee Gomez was crowned Queen of St Joseph s Annual Parish Fiesta Saturday night by Miss Petra Renteria. Attendants included Ramon Escobar Jr Jesus Martinez and many others. Grand prize tire winner was William Kilgore with cedar best and other prizes awarded to Jesus Estrada Jonette Tarango and Nino Madero.

Mrs. Slinkard Dies Former Lordsburg Resident

Mrs. Burt Slinkard, longtime Lordsburg resident, died September 26 at St. Ann's Hospital in T. of C. after a long illness. She was buried in Magdalena, New Mexico.

Charges Filed In Robbery Attempt

Salvador B. Rodriguez, 48, is jailed on assault and robbery charges after an attempted robbery of John A. Johnson near Railroad Ave and Pyramid St. at about 8:30 p m last Thursday. Johnson identified him in a lineup. arraignment set for Monday after attorney arrangements.

Shaw's Son-In-Law to Be Buried Today

Dr. Roy Landers, son in law of the Rev and Mrs Arthur Shaw, former Lordsburg residents, died Wednesday after an extended illness. Funeral services are set for Friday at 10 a.m. in the First Methodist Church in Yuma Arizona. The Rev Shaw served as pastor of the local First Methodist Church for several years.

Baptist Church Revival Services Begin Sunday

Revival services start October 4 at the First Baptist Church and run through October 11 with Rev. Jack W. Burns of Hammon Oklahoma preaching. Music by Travis Waters. Morning and evening services at 10 and 7 30 with a Tuesday 6 30 breakfast for men and nursery provided.

Newton Named Lordsburg Soil Conservation Supervisor

Rodney E. Newton arrived to lead the Soil Conservation Service office in Lordsburg replacing Henry D. Galt. He arrives from Mountainair New Mexico where he served nine years as Work Unit Conservationist. Newton and his wife Regina have two children Karen and Douglas and attend Lordsburg High School.

Catholic Census Set for Sunday Across Southwest Parishes

The El Paso Diocese launches a Sunday census from 2 to 6 pm across Hidalgo Grant Luna Dona Ana Otero Eddy Lea Sierra counties to count baptized Catholics. Some 1300 volunteers canvass the eight counties to prepare Family Record Cards and assess parish needs and future diocesan services.

Flechadores To Hold Field Shoot Meet

The Flechadores Archery Club will host a field shoot on Sunday October 4 at the local archery range east on Ownby Street. Registration starts at 1 p.m. and shooting begins at 2 p.m. Admission is 1 for adults and 50 cents for children up to 15. Tacos and cold drinks will be available.

Deer and Antelope Hunters Successful

Dellon Cox of the Flechadores Archery Club in Lordsburg returned Sunday night from a deer hunt in Arizona with a buck killed by bow and arrow. Mr and Mrs Ernest Winebrenner and Jamie Allen hunted Saturday near Fort Summer at Scott Brown's ranch and each brought back an antelope, with their daughter Nevelyn accompanying them.
