Killer Of Joe Martinez Is Sentenced In Murder Case

Domesto Contreras received a 90 to 99 year term in the state penitentiary for killing his son in law Joe Martinez in Lordsburg. District Judge A W Marshall presided after a venue change to Silver City where the jury found murder in the second degree on March 22.

Disability Freeze Added To Social Security

The rule excludes the disability period from an insured worker’s record, preventing loss of status or lower future benefits, with eligibility requiring five of ten years worked and six months of disability.

Deadline for Registration in Hidalgo County

Voters must meet state residency requirements and be registered to vote in the November election. The deadline for registration or reregistration is 5 P.M. October 4 at the Lordsburg courthouse. If registering elsewhere or changing party, do so at this courthouse.

Lordsburg will host the district PTA gathering on November 6 with speakers Miss Kennedy from National and Mrs Aaron Margulis state PTA president. Mrs Shumfelt district president and Mrs Rhene Ashton of Silver City visited Lordsburg to arrange the program and a coffee welcome.

Lie Detector Clears Armstrong in Coogler Case

Officers conducted a two hour lie detector test on Armstrong to probe involvement in the Ovida Coogler killing. The test showed no connection, and Armstrong was returned to jail in Lordsburg awaiting trial for the Ruby Cardenas murder near Globe. He admitted being with Cardenas the night she was killed and burying her body after striking her. Justice of the Peace C. L. Brown entered a not guilty plea for Armstrong.

August Savings Bond Sales Hit Record Nationwide

Hidalgo County residents invested 28596.25 in Series E and H bonds in August. State totals rose 10.6 percent from August 1953 to 951783.75, with nationwide E and H Bond sales reaching 415 million. Bond Chairman J A Foster urges thrift as school year begins.

Local GPA Opposes Big Game Hunting Regulations

The State Game Commission sets a two week season from November 6 to 21 in Hidalgo County allowing deer hunting of bucks and does south of the Southern Pacific line through Animas. Local sportsmen fear deer extermination and a wholesale slaughter. Four counties including Hidalgo are slated for two week doe and buck hunting. Big Horn Game Protective Association in Lordsburg protests and circulates petitions to stop the doe hunt. Dudley Robertson leads the petition drive with signs at local sporting goods stores.

New Mexico residents pay 7.3 percent of their incomes in state taxes, the highest nation except Louisiana, per figures released by the Taxpayers Association of New Mexico. The Southwest shows Oklahoma 6.7, Arizona 5.6, Colorado 4.8, Texas 3.8 percent, with 60 percent of revenue from sales and gasoline taxes.
