Swan Unit No 30 Legion Auxiliary met in regular session at the hall with Mrs Ena Mitchell presiding. A district conference report was shared and plans for a Christmas party at Mrs Wright's home on December 1 were announced. Members organized a Christmas gift shop for Ft hospital packages and solicit donations with gifts sent to Fort Bayard. The group thanked Amin’s Department for donated ribbon used in package bows.
Earl Louthan, vice president of Mountain States Telephone Telegraph, K. A. Karst plant manager, Bill Ramer district plant superintendent, C. F. Hal district manager, and F. E. Harenberg Manager spent several days in Lords last week. They met with Mayor Koff to discuss the assess against the company for city streets and alleys.
The New Mexico Aggies football team halted in Lordsburg at Myers Restaurant during their trip home from Tempe where the Devils beat them 23 to 19 at night. The party consisted of 39 people.
A summary of Lordsburg Police Department October activity reports with 96 arrests or citations 69 cases disposed of in Police Court and 730 dollars in fines. Revenue from fines includes 12 cases of drunken and disturbing the peace 48 speeding 3 drunk driving and more.
There will be no school on Monday November 10 in observance of Veterans Day. Schools will operate normally on Tuesday November 11 as announced.
Hidalgo County Fair Board offers a 25 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who broke into the Fair Grounds Exhibit Building, shattered window panes, and destroyed light bulbs and other property.
The council voted to join a city employee group insurance with a 20 percent premium contribution. Twenty employees enrolled in the Harold Scofield plan after two options were shown at Monday’s meeting. The council also set Resolution No. 65 to bill Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co. $300 monthly for street access, and authorized bids for a standard police car. Officials present included Mayor Alan Koff, City Clerk E M Fisher, City Attorney Wayne Woodbury, and aldermen Ben Cochran, Fausto Noce, A F Miller, A D Black, and Harold Bishop.
William Kipp of Lordsburg pledges Sigma Alpha Epsilon at New Mexico A&M College. A freshman pre-law major, Kipp is a 1958 Lordsburg High School graduate active in student council football track and chorus.
The Lordsburg Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce counted votes on November 27 with six candidates tied for fifth place. To resolve the tie the board will place all tied candidates on the ballot and mail ballots to members soon. Nominees include F. F. Harenberg B. M. Kimbley Victor Reay Fd Hitson Richard Dockum Dr. Harry W. Sellers Claude Speer W. C. Lawrence N. M. Morrison and Fay Powell. Members will vote for three directors.
The Annual Crippled Children's Clinic under the Public Welfare Department was held October 30 at the First Methodist Church in Silver City. Albuquerque pediatrician Dr. Stewart Adler and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Wylie Johnson attended, with nursing staff from Santa Fe Grant Catron Luna and Hidalgo counties. Hidalgo representatives were Mrs. Jane Cureton and Mrs. Mary Frances Rice.
Mrs. M. Messecar spent a few days last week in Phoenix visiting her daughter Mrs. Dewey Mulford and family.
The Chamber of Commerce announced that local stores will not close on Tuesday November 11 Veterans Day, keeping shopping hours as usual for residents and travelers.
Hidalgo County voters backed Democrats in most races with Governor Mechem leading Burroughs, and Judge Payne top Democrat counts at 999. The unofficial tabulation shows strong support for amendments except Number 5, with statewide patterns mirroring the county. Balloting reached 1240 voters. results await county canvassing.
The Rev. Arthur Shaw of First Methodist Church will conduct evangelism services in Odessa Texas from Sunday November 2 to Thursday November 6. His son the Rev. David Shaw, pastor of St Luke's Methodist Church, will host and support the events.
