Residents denounce a civilian patrol using an unmarked car to cite speed violators in the town. They claim the plan harms business, tourism, and public safety, urging the mayor and council to stop the program and restore uniform enforcement.
The city school superintendent reports ongoing vandalism over a week with damage to his car including broken windshield and left side windows. A tire deflation and windshield wiper theft followed. Earlier acts dated Oct 21 included burning tires near the high school and fire extinguisher vandalism.
The Virden Extension Club sponsored a library with books from New Mexico Rural Library Extension. Mrs Anna Hatch and members indexed and shelved the books for distribution. A large crowd visited, checked out books, and sale items funded building expenses. Library hours are Tuesdays and Saturdays 2 30 to 5 P.M.
Lordsburg Credit Union will meet at City Hall Monday evening November 17 at 8 pm to elect officers. Nominees include Clarence Blair Ray Saucedo Harber Tiburcio Ramirez Frank Orona and Lawrence Medina for the board of directors.
Mrs Ray Silvas and children and Mrs Hope Sakaleras and children, Deming residents, spent Sunday visiting with Mrs Ben Talavera.
A $25 reward is offered and a $75 reward may be paid for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who broke into the Fair Grounds Exhibit Building, shattered window panes, damaged light bulbs, and caused other destruction.
David Walter Mitchell son of Ena Mitchell was seriously injured Sunday evening when his scooter skidded on the pipeline road south of town. He underwent emergency surgery for a torn spleen after internal bleeding continued. Bob Godfrey survived unhurt. Mitchell was listed in good condition the next day.
The Virden MIA staged the annual Music Speech and Drama Festival on November 5 in the chapel. The program showcased music scripture and narration across wards of the LDS Church with a large chorus soloists voice choir and narrators. Nearly the entire MIA participated and a sizable audience traveled from nearby towns.
The State Highway Commission at its October meeting invited bids on several road building and surfacing projects. It includes 14.67 miles from Lordsburg west end to Road Forks east end. A single two lane road will be upgraded to a four lane divided highway with interchanges at Gary and Animas. Completion may take 250 working days.
Members of Bataan VFW Post and Auxiliary No 3099 report a successful Buddy Poppy Day on Saturday November 8 assisted by Brownie Scout Troop No 7 led by Mrs John Kirby. Plans are made for a cookout. Funds support veterans in hospitals the VFW National Home at Eaton Rapids Mich and local charity cases.
Roddy Poindexter, exalted ruler, announced that veterans in VA hospitals can use deer hides donated by successful hunters. The Elks collect raw hides and trade them for tanned hides to supply the VA physical therapy program. Pickups are arranged by contacting the lodge or a member.
Lordsburg exchange will switch to automatic dialing in mid April 1960 at a cost over 300000. Mountain States Tel & Tel officials plan additions and remodeling worth about 40000, with delivery of dial gear timing tied to building completion and staff training. Expanded long distance lines will connect Lordsburg with Silver City and Deming, improving service.
Miss Janice Lehman, adviser of Assembly No. 17, Order of Rainbow for Girls, is chosen Rainbow Girl of the Month for her outstanding service. She is active in Student Council Future Teachers and edits the annual staff. Each month a Rainbow Girl is chosen and the Rainbow Girl of the Year will be selected at year end.
C. C. Martin of this city is honored with a Certificate of Appreciation for 10 years active service with the Selective Service System. The award, presented by President Eisenhower, follows earlier recognitions for Geo. P. Jeffus and D. R. Robertson for longer and shorter terms.
