After a five day adjournment the capital session produced one surviving tax bill an individual income surcharge with potential voter approval. Governor Cargo’s program faced heavy criticism and many measures were killed while some revenue funding for schools looked likely to pass if certified suitable funds are found.
A two year old patient from Mesquite survives a liver transplant. Family members and doctors describe the operation as a success with ongoing recovery and follow up care.
A local church crusade details its finances with money to be sent to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association for a New Mexico representative, film production costs, and town expenses. Local spending includes rent 150 dollars a Corondo theatre, 4 dollars postage, 156.80 to Worldwide Pictures for training materials, 23.02 to Mountain States Telephone, and 113.30 to Lordsburg Liberal for printing. The steering committee thanks the Chamber of Commerce for office use and all contributors.
The pupils of the Van Buren Music Studio present a piano recital on Saturday June 1 at the Junior High Auditorium. The public is invited to attend.
Lordsburg men’s softball league opens Monday June 10 with two 7 p.m. games. Sponsors include C and E Auto, Southwest Supply, Billanttey Shell and Federal Reserve. Roster lists feature numerous players across C E Auto, Southwest Supply, and Shell teams with multiple matchups and playoff note.
Chief Antonio Arredondo reiterates that bicycle riders must obey ordinances and regulations. He warns that riding or parking on sidewalks endangers pedestrians and violators may be cited in court with possible fines.
The city pool opens Thursday 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and operates daily 1 09 a.m. to 7 p.m. except Monday. It will be open all day with a 10 minute rest period for under 16s. Red Cross lessons and lifesaving courses begin June 16 with free entries for spectators. Pool staff includes manager Mocen Basa and lifeguards Speer and Waren.

Mayor Alan Koff seeks removal of Judge C. L. Brown in district court. Brown’s attorney contests a town ordinance void and unconstitutional citing a prior friet court decision. The case questions holding offices and chamber location, with hearings scheduled as the district judge appoints a special master.
Three local youths were charged with assault in connection with a Friday night incident at a down stop dust area. Bond was set at 1,000 dollars each, and defendants released on posting. One defendant has requested Judge Brown be disqualified. Another case notes Jimmy De La O, 19, charged with liquor sale by self and taking a vehicle without owner consent on May 25. held in jail in lieu of 1,500 dollar bond.
The Lordsburg Hidalgo Library launches an eight week summer reading program from June 3 to July 27 titled Vacation Readers Go Everywhere. Children must read ten books with oral reports from grades and written reports from older participants to earn an achievement certificate.
