County Booster Banquet Unites Four Counties at Lordsburg

A Hidalgo county booster banquet at Lordsburg drew leaders from Grant Luna Cochise and Hidalgo counties. Speakers urged unity beyond county lines for the 1940 fair and feeder sale with 500 calves pledged and plans for strong support from the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association.

Steak Fry Draws Lordsburg Couples on Silver City Road

A Thursday steak fry attracted several Lordsburg couples at a picnic along the Silver City road. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Hugh Garrett of Steins, Mr and Mrs Jack Burrow, Mr and Mrs H E Scofield, Mr and Mrs Noble Kirkpatrick, Mr and Mrs T R Taggart, Billy Garrett, and Noble Kirkpatrick Jr.

Lordsburg High School Commencement Program Highlights

Lordsburg High School held its commencement on Thursday May 23 with a large audience. Maverick band provided processional music directed by W C Mearns. Rev J Marion Small led invocation and benediction. Mary Dee Hindman Katherine Messecar and Thelma Huston sang, Mary Messeecar played piano. Dr BE H Fixley University of New Mexico Education professor delivered the oration, introduced by Principal Rey Melugin. Mrs Thelma Ross sang Dreams with accompanist Mrs Claude C Puller. Diplomas were awarded by Superintendent Tom J Mayfield. Honor students included James Riggle and Ern estine Huston who received Conder awards. Lula Johnson won the B P W scholarship of 25 dollars. 1940 class roll listed multiple graduates.

Surprise Farewell Party For Charlie Ben Olney

A group of Charlie Ben Olney’s boy friends hosted a surprise party at Mrs. Harry Wallace’s home before the Olney family’s move to El Paso. The afternoon featured lively games and a polo shirt gift. Decoration Day Observance in Lordsburg Honors Fallen Soldiers

Lordsburg businesses closed for Decoration Day as The American Legion and Legion Auxiliary led a motor to Mountain View Cemetery to decorate soldiers graves including World War I veteran Robert Swan. Mrs Mildred Hoard who for four years served as cashier of the Community Public Service Company and earlier held office work resigned effective June first after faithful service. Her duties are taken by Miss Mildred Swaggart who assumed them on the same day.

New Mining Development In Animas Country

Frank Weldon Jr and associates report a successful Animas mining venture in El Paso area plans for extensive development. They purchased an Ingersoll Rand compressor and mining equipment with a working capital of 10000 dollars. The mine assays up to 7 percent lead and 15 ounces of silver.

A Relief Society closing party was held at Mrs. Boyd Nally’s home on Tuesday afternoon for L D S Church members. President Mrs. A Nebe ker received a gift. Death of Mrs Thwaits in Silver City

After a brief illness Mrs Lol Thwaits of Silver City died Tuesday morning. Her remains were taken to Silver City for burial. She leaves behind three sons Henry Ben and Edwin and two daughters Grace and Phyllis. Obituary next week.

Vacation Bible School Opens at Baptist Church

Beginning Monday at 4 30 a m the Baptist Church will hold another Vacation Bible School. Past programs were successful and entertaining as well as educational for children ages from 5 to 17. No enrollment fee. A mission offering will be collected at the close. Hours are 8 30 to 11 20.
