Traffic Bureau Releases New Statistics
The Transportation Department's Traffic Safety Bureau reports April and year to date motor vehicle crash data. Chief John Fenner notes 41 fatal April crashes causing 57 deaths, totaling 123 fatal crashes and 153 deaths through April. Compared with 1980's first four months, there were 117 fatal crashes and 128 deaths. Of 153 year to date fatalities, 119 were motor vehicle, 25 pedestrians, eight motorcyclists, and one tricyclist. Fenner notes 11 April fatalities were children age 10 or younger, nine killed in motor vehicles, with none using safety belts or restraints. He urges use of approved child restraints and warns a 30 MPH stop cannot safely protect a 10-pound child.
