David, a year old boy, was struck by a pickup driven by Janes Sweet on Sunday morning near a track. The truck attempted to avoid the boy but could not, striking the youngster and causing the incident to continue toward page five for more details.
A group of eight businessmen arrived by plane for the Latdsburg breakfast meeting with Ed Manager of the Tuc- Chamber of Commerce. The visitors, seeking growth in New and Arizona, were greeted at the airport by Latdsburg Chamber members.
Police report more than one hundred bicycles in Lordsburg were striped with luminous tape purchased by the city. Kids may visit the police station on Railroad Avenue to get a free red rear and silver front stripe applied, courtesy of City Clerk W. D. Hall and the City Council.

Mrs Viola Wright mother of Felix Gauthier Sr of Animas was blown from her home step by a strong wind Friday afternoon. She suffered a shattered left hip and broken left wrist. She was taken to Southwestern General Hospital in El Paso by Heather Ambulance and operated on Saturday morning. A pin and silver plate were inserted in the hip joint. She is recovering and would welcome cards from friends.
The W F W Post No 3000 and the Robert Swan Post No 30 American Legion plan a Memorial Day flag ceremony at Hidalgo County Courthouse. The event is set for Sunday May 30 1954 at 446 PM with a short program and is open to the public.
Commencement exercises at Lordsburg High School May 21 featured twelve seniors receiving scholarships and thirteen earning special awards. Guest speaker was Tom Popejoy, president of the University of New Mexico. Recipients included Douglas Harrington to New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and Vern Payne to Brigham Young University among others.
The Lordsburg summer recreation program begins Monday June 7 with gym hours 9:00 to 11:00 A M and 2:00 to 3:30 P M daily. Open to Lordsburg school students, activities include all school gym games and a junior softball league for boys under sixteen.
The city's stores will close on Monday May 31 for Decoration Day. Garages filling stations and restaurants are not affected by this closure.
Lordsburg schools announce an instrumental program starting Monday May 31 with registration for beginning band students 9 AM to 12 PM in the high school band room. Free lessons offered to fifth to twelfth graders. Senior and junior bands will plan schedules and instrument policies with band director Roger Brandt.
Cub Scout Pack held a meeting at the Legion Hall on Friday May 21 with a Pet Show. Prizes included shortest legs Ronnie Huna first and Larry Brunner second. best trained pet Leroy Fullbright first and Lanny Williams second. most obedient pet Jim. Continued on Page 4.
The Hatch team emerges as the team to beat early in the season. Banner Mine’s squad pounded the National Guard boys for 14 runs while they managed only 3. National Guard pitcher Talavera struggled with control as Banner collected six safeties. Co. P. & also had fielding issues Wednesday night.
Notice from shop instructor A L Blanton announces a summer shop program for eight weeks at the high school. The shop will be open today through Friday from 5 00 PM to 10 00 PM and will run Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays with two groups per day 5 00 7 30 PM and 7 30 10 PM. Junior high students eligible based on upcoming grade levels may enroll for the same slots.
