Lordsburg Project Sparks State and Federal Funding Dispute

A letter from Tatech highway commissioner criticizes the Bureau of Public Roads for not funding the Lordsburg urban highway rebuild. Lordsburg Plans Summer School For Non English Speaking Students

Lordsburg Municipal Schools announce a four week summer program for non English speaking beginners entering school in August. Classes run at Wilson School 9 to 11 a.m. and Southside School 1 to 3 p.m. for five days a week starting Monday June 3. Principal R V Traylor urges enrollment to help these students reach pre first and first grade goals and qualify for promotion to second grade.

Ranch Barbecue To Honor Sen Ed Mechem

A public ranch barbecue honoring United States Senator Ed Mechem is set for noon next Sunday May 26 at the Ladder Ranch eight miles east of Hillsboro on the Black Range north of Las Cruces. Host Robert C. Anderson leads Volunteers for Mechem as thousands are expected to attend from across New Mexico. Senator Mechem will speak in a shady grove by a running stream after a long pit barbecue.

New Game License Vendors Appointed in Hidalgo County

Virgil Jones states two new Department of Game and Fish license vendors are in Hidalgo County Don Flints Sales and Service Cotton City and Murdocs General Store Virden. The move aims to help locals and out of state visitors for hunting and fishing in New Mexico. Channel cat fish have been landed on the Gila River Ful er Farms area and the new Lake 36 miles northeast of Silver City is stocked with trout weighing up to four pounds. The department predicts strong trout fishing at the lake soon.

Memorial Day Closures Planned by Lordsburg Chamber

The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce announces that all businesses including the bank will close in observance of Memorial Day on Thursday May 30.

City Council Decides LULAC and Optimist Club Concessions

At a special 5 p.m. meeting the city council ruled LULAC will operate the concession stand at the ball park and the Optimist Club will run the baseball program with city funding. A $400 allocation was approved for setup and equipment. Aldermen debated mayoral power and the potential ordinance change. John Moralez was nominated for the position of police patrolman with several votes and abstentions recorded. The council then moved to draft the tentative budget for the next fiscal year.

Guard Unit Receives Excellent Rating

Eury C 2nd AW Bn SP 200 h Arty Lordsburg unit of New Mexico National Guard earned an Excellent Rating from an I G Inspection on May 1. The review covered administration supply procedures training maintenance of equipment and ranks and tested members on appearance uniform manuals formations and job knowledge. Recent enlistments include Staff Sergeant Salvador A Diaz and Private 1 Alex Madrid with SSG Diaz a former guardsman and employed by E J Short Company. The National Guard Picnic is scheduled for Sunday May 26 at the K P Picnic Grounds.

Calcutta Roping Contest Slated Sunday At Local Fairgrounds

Lordsburg Roping Club to stage a Calcutta roping contest at the local fairgrounds arena on Sunday May 26 starting at 1 00 p m Spectators may join by bidding on a team or calf roper with auctions to begin at 1 00 p m The event features world champion ropers from the Rodeo Cowboys Association and includes kid s barrel races in two classes 13 years and under and open Adults pay 50 cents and children under 12 pay 25 cents

May 29 Poli Vaccine Clinic At Hidalgo County Health

A make up clinic for missing a third Sebin oral polio dose will be held at the Hidalgo County Health Department during regular hours on Wednesday May 29. The Type II vaccine will be the only vaccine available at this time.

LULAC Council Sponsoring June Barbecue and Sky Dive

LULAC Council No. 358 sponsors a Sunday barbecue at Short's Baseball field on June 9. A skydiving show from 4 000 to 8 000 feet is planned with divers performing 2 to 3 p m. Tickets are four dollars per plate, with proceeds funding Lordsburg High School scholarships.

Former Lordsburg Teacher Virginia Harding Dies in Tonn

Mrs Virginia Harding a former Lordsburg school teacher of Le e died May 22 after a short illness. Her son is George and she is the sister of Mrs Harold Scofield of Lordsburg. Ruth Harding has been with them for two weeks.

Clifford Murder Case Slated For Juvenile Court

Judge Norman Hodges announced that Gordon Clifford, charged with murdering his step father Ralph J. Clifford, will be handled in juvenile court July 12 as he will not turn 18 until September. A large jury venire was drawn for the district court term with many names listed and no report date set yet. Last Friday Manuel De La Garza pleaded guilty to a district court misdemeanor for selling liquor to a minor and was fined $60 plus costs.
