In 1944 a Joint Resolution established Citizenship Day on the third Sunday in May. The notice invites native born and naturalized citizens to attend ceremonies at City Hall on May 21 1944 at 3 PM with Jack Weather as master of ceremonies and Representative H V Payne as principal speaker.
The Banner Mining Company hires Vacano and Fuller of Silver City to sink its main shaft to the 660 foot level. Crew already on site prepares with pump, safety bulkhead, blower and equipment for work from the 1,500 foot level. Completion targeted by August first with plans to open 1,600 level quickly after. Labor shortage has delayed deepening for three years.
Democratic candidate Tom Wilson toured Albuquerque this week advocating public lands leadership. He proposed letting a New Mexico Educational Association committee choose his head bookkeeper and auditor, naming Tom J. Mayfield of the A M E A and Lordsburg schools chief as a potential committee member.
Sgt. Albert Harding, brother of Mrs. Betty Smith, serves with a medical detachment at an eighth air force base in England. He has organized a 23 voice choir and directs sacred programs at nearby English churches. A Nashville paper ran a photo of the choir. Ray bonds and stamps.
Mrs. H. L. Scofield received a corsage from Rev. F. R. Poage at the close of a Sunday service honoring outstanding local mothers. The church has a long tradition of recognizing a mother each year, following earlier honorees Mrs. Kerr, Mrs. S. M. Chase, and others, with a large congregation attending as Rev. Poage preached an inspiring sermon and Charles Crouch Jr. played a trumpet solo titled Mother with Mrs. Claude Fuller at the piano.
Mrs John Bradford and daughter Betty along with Miss Bess Johnston left Lordsburg Tuesday morning en route to Texas. Johnston travels to Snyder to spend time with her parents while Betty heads to Sweetwater for a week with Mr Bradford’s parents. Mrs Bradford will visit Dallas then stop in Carlsbad to see her parents on the way back.
Memorial Day service on May 30 at 11 a m led by the American Legion. The program includes entrance of colors, pledge, invocation by Rev H T Ray, memorial vision by Commander Jack Heather, hymns, an address by Rev Franklin R Poage, and a closing with colors retire. Family and veterans’ relatives are invited. businesses are asked to close during the ceremony.
Mr and Mrs Clyde C Kerr and nephew Preddie Tinnin of Marfa were guests of Mayor and Mrs Nat Gammon this week. Kerr is a cousin of the Lordsburg Kerrs. They are en route to California to visit Freddie's grandmother.
Phillips, retiring manager of the Up-To-Date Grocery, heads to war against the Japs and Germans and vows to return to greet customers and make new friends. Homer Brooks succeeds him and operations continue smoothly.
In New York two grandmothers at Aero Spark Plug Corp invest part of their salaries in War Bonds each payday. Elizabeth Taggart and Edna Neff back their families with bonds for a Seabee stepson and a Marine father, linking activism to the war effort.
Mrs. Neff endorses the Grandmothers League founded by Mrs. Marshall wife of the General. She supports buying Bonds with grandchildren as co owners as an emergency fund for education while noting she hopes not to need it. Her son Herman is a fireman first class in the Navy and her last letter from Guadalcanal is cited.
Mr and Mrs J M Phillips of Separ entertained last Thursday night at their ranch home with a dinner and bridge party. The guests included Mr and Mrs Creighton Bowman Mr and Mrs John Bradford and Mr and Mrs Charles Steele. High scores honors went to Mr Bowman and Mrs Phillips.
Mr. and Mrs. 8S. C. Pruitt of Silver City called on old friends in Lordsburg on Tuesday. They visited Mrs. Pruitt’s daughter Mrs. Robert Corbell, who left for San Francisco to join her Navy husband. Mrs. Pruitt, formerly Mrs. B. H. Cross, aided in forming the Lordsburg Hidalgo Library Association and chaired the Child Welfare Department of the Lordsburg Woman’s Club.

The Church of Christ at Fifth and Pyramid hosts a morning service at 10 a m and a first service at 11 a m. An evening message titled Am I My Mother's Helper is planned with a Wednesday prayer meeting at 8 p m.

Dr Wiggins address at the El Paso College of Mines and Metallurgy commencement impressed the 1944 LHS graduates and audience. Superintendent Mayfield and Principal Melugin received praise for organizing the event and for continuing strong leadership as the faculty stayed on for next year.
Members of the Lordsburg Business and Professional Club met at Mrs. Olivia Welle’s ranch home for a covered dish dinner. Edith Wilson chaired the nominating committee which named new officers including vice president Clara Kimbly and secretary Conder, with others keeping their posts. The club voted to purchase War Bonds and announced State Federation membership achievement helped by Emma Scofield. The next meeting will be a lawn party at Clara Kim bly’s home on May 26.
Mr and Mrs J 8 Culberson hosted a buffet supper at their ranch Wednesday for Freeman MeWhorter's birthday. Guests included Mr and Mrs Marvin Pierce Mrs My Hudson Mr and Mrs Freeman MeWhorter Mine Susie MeWhorter Mrs Monty Cram Lewis Trotter Mary Culberson and others. The event followed by a Women Society of Chr ing cards gathering after supper.
Clarence Roweren a 36 year old well known resident died by firing a bullet into his brain at his Main Street home opposite the Knights of Pythias hall. He bade his wife goodbye before the fatal shot. The body was moved to Heather Funeral Home for shipment to Tucson for the funeral.
Mr and Mrs Nat Gammon entertained Music Club members at Hotel Hidalgo Thursday evening. Attendees included Mr Rows, Glen Scofeld, Dr. James Sumners, and others.
Sgt Marshall Fuller of the U S Army enjoys a seventeen day leave with his wife and small daughter, staying with his parents Mr and Mrs Charles Fuller. The brief vacation includes time off from duties and a reunion with family.
James Henry Ellison Jr Henry Fuller Charles Crouch and Gerald Moseley left on Wednesday to join the U S Navy for the duration. The community calls them a fine bunch of boys as they embark on naval service.
Wayne Ridgway managing editor of the Copper Era Clifton arrives in Lordsburg to meet his wife and two daughters from West Plains Missouri.
Baron J. W. Auriemma special ambassador for the Salvation Army conducted his annual tour to raise funds. He received a $100 check from Harry A. Day and many donors increased their regular subscriptions as the army conducts wartime relief work.
Mr and Mrs Freeman McWhorter and Mr and Mrs J R Poin Dexter hosted a dinner Saturday at the McWhorter ranch north of town. Guests included Mayor Nat Gammon Major W P Churchill Captain Larson and Mr and Mrs G P Jefus.
The Lordsburg High School Alumni Association will hold a meeting in the high school building on May 23 at 8 p.m. All members are urged to attend.
At the adjourned meeting in City Hall the new council, led by Mayor Nat Gammon, unanimously approves division of city duties among council and staff. Geax and Water, Street, Police Fire, Garbage and Sanitation, Budget and Ways committees named. Forrest Sanders appointed City Attorney. Kay Talvaro named City Marshal. Dedeigell retained as day police. ten percent raises for street cleaner. Next meeting set for June fifth. Citizens may bring concerns to regular meetings or contact City Clerk Judy Klement.
A Sunday birthday celebration for Mrs Thelma Williams featured a horseback procession and several contests at Carle race track. Pat Carley won the 360 yard dash. Frank Hill and Dave Williams tied for first in the reining contest. Frank TH and Pat Carley tied in the stake race. Thelma Williams won the walking horse race after Carley’s disqualification. all entry fees went to Thelma as a birthday gift. Participants enjoyed sandwiches and cake at the Williams home.
Mr and Mrs Henry Ellison hosted a buffet supper and dance for their son about to enter the Navy. Music was provided by a phonograph. Attendees included Joan Simmons Jimmy Hall Betty Reynolds Glen Roos Edith Bray Charles Crouch Rebecca Bray Henry Fuller Rosemond Ineue Barbara Meeks Gerald Betty Sue Stone Vernon RN McWhorne and Ralph Dunlap. Washington DC group led by Mrs. George C. Marshall unveils an emblem and urges grandparents to buy war bonds for their grandchildren. The campaign encourages mothers and fathers to start stamp albums as a savings plan and to secure their children's future.
The Sharp Misses Club under Mrs. Claude C Jer presented a May recital at the Methodist church with students Betty Reynolds Lois Ewing Faye Nally Dorle Coughlin and guest artist Harry Rosenstein. Highlights included a Rhapsody in Blue by Mrs Puller Frances Bundy and Oh Fairy New Mexico sung with Lora Payne at the piano.
The Collector of Internal Revenue 5S. P. Vidal announces August 16 as the filing due date for information returns by tax exempt organizations for 1944 or fiscal years ending before April 1, 1944. The date was moved from April 15. Organizations affected include Chambers of Commerce Labor Unions Community Chests and charitable institutions. Blank Form 990 available at the Albuquerque office.
The public is cordially invited to attend a I Am An American Day meeting at the hall Sunday afternoon at 3 oclock. It is a special act of Congress proclaimed by the President and Governor of New Mexico. Sam Gass will lead in singing America and the chief orator will be Hon H Vearle Pa Jack Heather a model citizen will be master of ceremonies.
A. W. Betts of War Construction seeks able American workers for the Northwest plant. He is at Hotel Hidalgo through Saturday to provide full information and arrange employment at good wages.
