John McDonald a Hidalgo County resident and 1969 Lordsburg High graduate announces his bid for the Democratic nomination for County Sheriff. He has been with the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department since 1979 and previously served with the Lordsburg Police Department. He cites drugs and alcohol as major county problems driving crime.

Hidalgo County Faces Health Services Funding Risk

Hidalgo Health Services may see a budget cut from the state threatening local services. Animas High Names 1986 Valedictorian and Salutatorian

Dana McLaughlin is valedictorian and Olivia Ramirez salutatorian for the 1986 Animas High class. Dana, daughter of Don and residence in Playas, is NHS member and student leader who will attend South Plains Junior College. Olivia, daughter of Tranquilno Ramirez in Animas, is NHS president and multi-sport athlete planning to study at the University of New Mexico. Honor graduates include Mary Ann Danielson and others. graduation on May 16, 1986 at 7:30 in the Auditorium.

District Attorney Appointed After Plane Crash Deaths

Michael Lewis was appointed to fill the term of the late District Attorney killed in a plane crash. Governor Tony Anaya named Lewis for the Sixth Judicial District, covering Luna, Hidalgo and Grant Counties. He was sworn in May 12, 1986 at 4:00 p.m. by Judge Norman Hodges and will serve until the November 1986 general election.

Governor signs bill to fund grasshopper spraying program

Governor Toney Anaya signs a measure authorizing state funds for grasshopper control after delays. The plan allocates federal money totaling 17 million dollars to 17 states affected, aiding local agricultural producers. Lordsburg Drug pharmacy closes all day Saturday and reopens Monday.

Pat Williams Named District Court Clerk

Pat Williams was selected by Presiding Judge Norman Hodges for Hidalgo County District Court Clerk. She began duties on May 5, overseeing filed district court records. Former Western Bank officer for four and a half years, she is a Lordsburg resident married to Lance Williams with two children, Mark and Tricia, both students at Lordsburg High School, aided by Deputy Court Clerk Tina Elias.

Operation Clean-Up Day Declared Spring Cleaning Month
