Local growers aim to boost prices at Ain giley as Willcox lettuce shipments ramp up with 1500 cars expected. A $5,009 installation funds a translator to rebroadcast on VHF, though no extra antenna is required. Community concerns rise over bond issues for schools and highway plans in the south district.
Interest is mounting for an All Expense Bus Tour of the Animas Valley with plans forming for an entertaining and educational trip. Lettuce harvest may begin the week of May 24 as Ed Kynaston and Marvin Folk coordinate with the Chamber of Commerce. The mayor of Cotton City will give the welcome address and Jack McGee may serve as tour director.
Reverend Hayden Swift Sears of Catalina Methodist Church in Tucson will deliver the Baccalaureate sermon for the 1959 graduating class in the high school auditorium May 24 at 8:00 p.m. Tom Wiley, state school superintendent of Santa Fe, will give the Commencement address at the gym on May 24 at 7 p.m. Public invited to both events honoring the Senior class.
Silver City announces an eight week summer session at New Mexico Western College from June 8 to July 31. Dean Donald Overturf of admissions and records says all departments offer courses. High winds reaching up to 75 miles per hour struck Wednesday night, bending and breaking TV antennas citywide and damaging a large tower sign. About 10 percent of antennas were affected, a cottonwood near Hidalgo Motel uprooted, and a highway billboard across from Dewey Jones Joe demolished. The powerful gusts lasted about a half hour before easing.
The Lordsburg Liberal promotes a May 29 Hidalgo County ad scavenger hunt titled Who's Who in Hidalgo County. Readers spot clues in ads, some with stars signifying related sponsor messages, to win cash prizes.
The Lordsburg Municipal School District No 1 faces outstanding debt of 126000 dollars as of June 30 with annual redemptions of 23000 dollars. A new bond issue of 100000 dollars could be voted to fund new facilities, with actual sale depending on need and bids.
Sally Baker daughter of Mr and Mrs Carl Baker was installed Sunday May 10 as Worthy Advisor of the Order of Rainbow for Girls at the Masonic hall. Wanda Wilder officiated aided by Katy Spencer Sue Freeburg Janice Lehman and Ruth Bishop. Fellow Rite members sang and played music. Sally dedicated her term to her parents and received gifts from family and Rainbow Girls. The event featured pink and white colors carnations and a white nylon gown with a pink corsage.
Eight Warner Brothers stars stopped in Lordsburg on a Hollywood to Philadelphia tour. Local officials and residents welcomed the group at the state line and ahead of an appearance on a platform built by W F Ritter Lumber. The event drew hundreds of youngsters, with school dismissed early. traffic was carefully managed by Hidalgo County and city police.
Merchants and the Chamber of Commerce agree to keep Lordsburg trading area businesses open on Saturday May 30 Decoration day for public convenience. Local shops will operate as usual to serve residents and visitors.
