Lordsburg School schedules prom and exams week

A busy week at Lordsburg School includes the Junior-Senior prom banquet on May 15 in the Jr. Auditorium, followed by baccalaureate services at the high school with Rev. Thomas of the First Church in Silver as speaker. Final exams run early in the week and commencement is set for Thursday, May Me.

Lordsburg Mavericks Take Fifth At State Meet

The Lordsburg Mavericks finished fifth at the State Class B meet in Albuquerque after a strong showing at the district meet in Las Cruces. Eunice won the state title with 1 point, followed by Fort Sumner with 35 and a list of other teams including Los Lunas, Santa Fe Indians, Capitan, Estancia, and Texico in the top ranks.

Local Schools Schedule Second Annual Music Festival

Local schools in Kay New Mexico host the second annual Music Festival on May 17 at 8 p m in Central School. Lordsburg Schools director Mrs bet Ross and Mr Roger lead about 200 students in a concert program featuring fifth and sixth grade choruses the Haith Chorus the Senior High Choir the Beginners Band and the Junior and Senior Bands. The festival aims to showcase vocal and instrumental performances with a program spanning multiple grades.

Lordsburg Warns Residents Against Shysters

Lordsburg residents are warned by the Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau about con artists led by James Terry. Terry and his wife Betty allegedly solicit uniforms from the Upland Uniform Corporation, taking money without delivering goods across multiple states. Vaughan Undergoes Psychiatric Examination in El Paso

Marvin Vaughan, accused killer of Amos Burgess, underwent psychiatric tests in El Paso General Hospital Annex to determine his mental state at the time of the death and presently. Sheriff O C Matthews and Deputy John Turney accompanied him from Grant County, with Turney staying during the exams.

Coronation of Baseball Queen Delights Crowd Despite Loss

A Sunday program featured a colorful parade and the crowning of the Lordsburg Queen Miss Nina Talavera and the Pirttleville Queen Miss Alecia Munoz. Edward Altuna led ceremonies and accepted the crown from Ernest Short, amid hopes for lasting good relations between the two teams.

Open House by Local National Guard Units May 15 1954

Local National Guard units will host an Armed Forces Day Open House on Saturday May 15 1954 on the parking lot in front of the depot on Railroad Ave Hidalgo County residents are invited to inspect displays including a 90 mm anti aircraft gun SCR 584 radar unit and other modern electronic gear. The battery will be shown in action tracking and simulating firing at a target plane with a Lordsburg CAP plane piloted by a CAP member. On Sunday the battery will fire small arms at the local firing range west of town for soldier qualification with weapons such as Carbine Cal 30 and M1 Rifle Cal 30.

Band Parents Club Buys School Bus Plan

The Lordsburg Band Parents Club held its May meeting with president Bertha Koff presiding. They voted to pursue a forty eight passenger bus for the coming year, with the School Board donate $2,000 and retain title. A committee including Robert Tibbs and A A Richards will arrange bids, to be approved by the board.

Softball Season Opens May 24 At Local High School Field

The local softball league of five teams begins Monday May 24 at the high school athletic field. Sponsors include Harvey Hatch Community Public Service Co Banner Mining Co National Guard and Bishop Lumber Co. New Bishop team replaces Poco with Foy Powell as manager and mostly high school players with veterans from Poco.

Hidalgo County Hospital Open House May 9 Tea

In observance of National Hospital Day the Hidalgo County Hospital hosted an open house and tea on Sunday May 9 from 1 30 to 4 00 P M. The hospital has been redecorated and nurses quarters now feature a dining room lounge and bedroom. About one hundred attendees praised the staff for preparing the building for the event. The hospital began in 1922 as Lordsburg Hospital Co started by Dr C B Austin and his brother Paul.
