Hidalgo County Commissioners approved a federally funded emergency employment program for students on summer vacation. Twenty one workers will be employed nine weeks at 26 hours weekly earning 1.60 dollars an hour with 18 assigned to schools and 3 to the county. Applications open May 21 at the courthouse.
June 21 has been set for the annual chamber banquet with speaker David King director of the State Planning office. The chamber met at the Range and awarded 8x10 color photos of the Maverick state champion basketball team, funded bills, and planned a display room in the new chamber office.
A visitor entered the Tower Texaco Station in Lordsburg at 7:55 p.m. Sunday and stole $60 from the register before driving away. Police continue the investigation. Officer Valenzuela later captured a suspect charged with grand theft by Tucson authorities and returned him to proper custody.
The district attorney says no charges have been filed in the May 3 shooting death of Lordsburg resident Carlos Bejarano and no inquest date set yet. Bejarano was killed in Hidalgo General Hospital by sheriff's deputy Harvey Martin. Martin has five years with the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department. Mary Flores, Bejarano’s wife, was treated for arm stab wounds earlier and details await the inquest. The investigation continues with witness statements collected.
